Makes me appreciate having a day job. Anyone read mixerman? In his book he explains very well how the band is being treated to everything without knowing that they're paying for everything themselves. |

It's an interesting piece, but I think he's forgotten the publishing royalties.
If they've pressed 250,000 copies of an album with, say, eleven songs on it, all of which are self-penned, then their publisher has made 50p per copy... or 125,000. Publishing deals are normally 60/40 in favour of the publisher, so even with a 20K advance the band have made 30K from mechanical royalties... plus all their TV sync money, PRS from airplay, and so on.
It's also worth noting that those mechanical costs are paid by the record label... and that they have to paid regardless of whether the disc is ever sold. So in this example the label made a fat profit - but at a corporate level that goes to offset the fallout from the bands who pressed up 10,000 CD's and sold a few hundred. |

I have. A really funny take on the band dynamic. |

| i love that Steve Albini thing...it made me laugh so hard knowing some kids really aspire to bollocks like that...and at the same time it depresses me greatly...it's why music is my hobby...and i'll keep it that way... |

I was posting on a local forum about timewasters in bands, and i was giving my experience of it over the years(i didn't always play covers... ) anyway the replies were frightening with the 'kids' nitpicking over quote i gave by hunter thompson, and fighting between themselves, nothing to do with the music,i made an observation that they might be better off honing their chops and working on getting gigs was met with a barrage of abuse, reading their posts it was obvious that knew each other from various local indie bands, there was also two pages of a thread about the time i played with larry mullen from U2 a couple of years back at a charity gig....with people speculating about us as a band and about larry and why he did it...total bullshit.... not one of the thick bastards got it at all... it was a spur of the moment thing, nothing more...we were in the right place at the right time and he was in the mood for a jam..... it reminded me a lot of the stuff in mixermans diaries...i got a good laugh out of reading them, nice one bossarea for posting the link. .mixerman really hit the nail on the head when he said it's in the fingers.... i also got a good laugh about fingaz and the 'wegro' crack..... roll a couple of fatties for the road...word up . |

| It seems that Mixerman has a big ego. It would be cooler to know what band this is so you can relate more to it. |

i suppose he can't really do that as i'm sure litagation would ensue rather quickly following any 'naming and shaming'.... also he has to work in the industry so i think work would dry up on him rather quickly if he was known to be writing an online account of his life in the studio with some of these people.....i actually thought it was very funny in parts and he also has a laugh at his own misfortune at times like where he scalded himself with a starbucks and broke his ankle all in the same day...also where he wore a hawaiian shirt for the doc they were filming in the studio..... |
