I'm speaking to the late 80's early 90's versions that had the pedal attached with two allen head screws. How do these compare with Boss as far as durability and sound quality go?

from my experience, they have heavier casings, inferior (plastic) stomp switches that tend to break after a while (definitely not tour-durable, but should be ok for occasional bar gigs), and if you don't want to use a battery, require a 10V power supply with a 1/8" male plug. if you do use a battery, the battery cover door is easily lost. the distortion pedals tend to have considerably more gain (with all knobs at 12:00) than similar Boss pedals (e.g., FX69 Grunge vs. FZ-3, FX86? Death Metal vs. MT-2), and more noise. the knob names and paint schemes are also much less conservative than a Boss pedal, aesthetically speaking. most of them are still very cheap right now ($20-$30 range; my Grunge cost ~$22 delivered), so it's worth trying a couple.

The case is heavier than Boss's. And yes, the stomp swtich does not last too many stomps. I only have one DOD stomp box (FX-10). The battery cover is always taped.

Not as road-worthy as Boss pedals.

I have several Boss pedals and they all sound good and are durable. I've had them since the mid/late 80's and they work just as good now as they did back in the day. I have one DOD pedal -- the blue chorus pedal and I also needed to put tape on the rear to keep the battery in when I used it. I didn't particularly care for the sound that much -- shoulda bought a Boss Chorus pedal instead! Also, my DOD chorus pedal has been broken for years and sits in my garage collecting dust. Meanwhile, the Boss pedals endure! I've always felt that DOD pedals were garbage and they're pretty cheap so I guess you get what you pay for.

I guess its up to what you like. I am sure you could do tests and determine which is technically superior or whatever. But if you find one that suits your sound then why not go for it. I have a DOD FX50B and it is pretty good. The OD-2 beats it by a litte but that okay too.

Diversity on the pedalboard is a good thing....

Yep, mix and match could be fun.

I've got two DOD pedals myself:

The FX90 Analogue Delay - I really do like this one - the sound is very reminiscent of the good old DM-2, maybe a touch noisier though. It oscillates well too!

The FX25 Envelope Filter - I quite like this one aswell - it can be a very extreme sounding filter - far more pronounced than say the Boss FT-2 and you can get some almost synth like sounds from it.

I did own the FX68 Chorus but I wasn't impressed and sold it - it sounded very 'brittle' and 'toppy'. Nothing beats my beloved CE-2 !

DOD is what started my pedal addiction, I've owned more DOD boxes over the years than any other brand, however, I have only held on to 3 of them, and technically 1 is Digitech. I think there are some decent DOD boxes, it just depends which effect you are looking for...the BiFet Preamp (FX10? I think) is a good, cheap clean boost, and I still like the Classic Fuzz (FX52) even though many hate that pedal...the FX17 is a great compact volume pedal, though the wah leaves a bit to be desired...with any effect, though, its all about the ear of the beholder...Quality wise though, both seem to be durable boxes, though the switches on the DOD seem weak compared to Boss, and both have weird little parts you can lose if you don't pay attention, like the Boss batterty compartment screw or rubber ring, and on older DODs the battery cover...

See that where a company like DOD could be good. Speciality products. I have also considered buying there Envelope Filter. I have read that Flea from RHCP uses one. Or the Grunge pedal. Although, if something is labelled "Grunge", I probably wouldn't buy it.

DOD FX13 GONKULATOR RING MODULATOR

DOD FX13 Gonkulator Ring Modulator - One of the coolest effects DOD ever made and then they sadly discontinued it. Take a decent run of the mill distortion, then take a limited ring modulator, fuse them together and somehow it all adds up to one amazing pedal. The Gonkulator is one twisted effect that can coerce out all kinds of atonal metallic clinks, robotic drones, and sick shortwave sounds out of your unsuspecting guitar. Due to its overall kookiness the Ring Modulator isn?t found on a lot of pedalboards but is a great one trick pedal to have in your miscellaneous effects palette. Adventurous bands like Broadcast , Devo, Sonic Youth and Tool have all used the ring modulator to great effect. We?ve spotted these new in the box at mom and pop music stores. They also show up on Ebay all time so don?t be afraid to lay down some cash for this crazy clangy box.

i downloaded the song "glass" by incubus. apparantly Mike uses a Gonkulator on the intro. i was expecting this crazy futuristic robot noise, but it just kinda sounds like weird reverb..

Just yesterday I did an A/B with my OD-2 and a DOD FX50B. I regret to say that the DOD pedal is stronger and more warm than the OD-2. It has more 'roll off' that a good overdrive has.

I am thinking about getting some more just to change up my rig. I would try DOD just to get a fresh perspective.
