| Hey gang, I decided the other day that i wanted to install a chip socket into my sd-1. So i have just sent it off to be put in along with a yellow water clear led. Anybody ever had this done? I'm not expecting huge sound changes but maybe some subtle ones that might be useful for other stuff. Don't get me wrong the stock chip Rules but i just want experiment. If nothing comes out of it so be it. I'm just bored and need something to tinker with. :) |

I am interested in what your opinion of this Mod is, but if I'm honest, I don't fully understand what you are getting done.

Hey Keith / Thanks Zerksies, With swapping out chips your supposedly to hear some audible difference in tone. Now i'm doing this with a silver label mit sd-1 and am saving the stock JRC4558DD chip to still use the pedal stock if my findings in chip changes aren't useable.
Hear is the list of chips i plan on trying.

| The "yellow water clear LED" is for the power indicator? Or, is it elsewhere in the circuit? Sometimes LED's replace regular diodes to alter clipping circuits. |

You've got it all wrong. SD-1s are supposed to get BLUE water-clear LEDs.
I'll be interested to hear the results of your experimenting. I've changed the op amps in a couple SD-1s, but only as part of a bigger mod. Some guys on the web go on about how different op amps are just totally right or wrong for a certain circuit, others just look at chip-swapping as subtle fine-tuning.
I haven't really experimented with op amps. I just read what I can find about a certain mod, then install the "consensus" op amp. I believe I have an LM1458 in my SD-1 Eternity mod right now, because that's what several folks said works best in an Eternity (it's even rumored to be the "original" chip in a real Lovepedal Eternity.)

I have been going through a similar process with my OD-3, having got the tone just about right for my ears and added a switched asymmetrical clipping option, I thought I would try some of the op amps I have lying around. I was running an NE5532 whilst doing a lot of the modding that was pretty close and I have tried a TL072 in the past but then I tried a RC4558P and a Burr Brown OPA2134PA. Didn't like the RC4558P, a bit to much upper mid messiness. The BB has done it for me which was a bit of a surprise. I was put off trying it as it is often described as a 'hi fi' chip and I am after a classic, natural tone but having put it in there it's sounding superb, a nice flat natural tone response with lots of clarity without needing too much top which the others were missing to my ears. Each op amp changed the tonal shape of the pedal to some extent, mainly at the upper end. Of course it's all a very personal thing though.

Another thing to have in mind is the functionality of the op-amp inside the circuit.
For example. if the op-amp is used for filtering purposes only after the clipping stages I would go for a hi-fi device like the burr brown.
This is the case for OD-3.
In SD-1, it's a different situation. Half the op-amp is used before and the other half is after clipping. So it's more difficult to find the right choice.
Personally, after trying about 10 different op-amps in SD-1, I put back the original chip as I liked the gain/clipping structure it was producing the most.

Hey guys, Man i tell ya i would have gone after a blue light but my keeley sd-1 has one. I'm actually getting a yellow-green LED now since they have no yellow ones. I should have the pedal here in a couple of days so we'll see what happens. I'm trying the burr brown first but have saved the original chip because afterall the chip is an original component and it's great in a sd-1 :)
This is 2008 mit i'm doing this to so not really a big deal.
Now if i were doing this to my soon to be delivered january 1983 sd-1 that would be a sin. I'm hoping i can maybe use this as a way to achieve this warm/smooth break up on my clean channel that i have been seeking.
I need to add the LM1458 to the list thanks for mentioning another chip. :)
