I presume you mean the solo in the songs, not the instrumental songs?!

Anyway:

"Firehouse", Ace Frehley "KISS", KISS 1974

"Hotel California", Eagles, "Hotel California", Eagles 1976

"So This Is Love?", Eddie Van Halen, "Fair Warning", Van Halen 1981

"Hot Dog And Shake", Steve Vai, "Skyskraper", David Lee Roth 1988

Dr Bob, I was talking about the studio version. I used to have On Your Feet or On Your Knees on cassette tape back in the 80s, but most of my cassette tapes disappeared when I started buying CDs. I'll need to get that one again at some point.

Just One??

"Can You Hear Me Knocking" from the Stones's Sticky Fingers Album.
I like the contrast it creates in the song, and how it kicks in, and yes in a typical late 60s, early 70s style it goes on.................for........quite some time.

Interesting to see that someone mentioned Eruption by Van Halen. One solo song? A set of solos or........????.............

Yes it still sounds amazing and cannot be beaten.
Never knew, that is until last night, that Van Halen finished a world tour with David Lee. Mmmmm, should play around with internet a bit more.............................

I knew my contribution to this thread would be loud and abrasive:

Brian Eno's Baby's on Fire, solo by Robert Fripp

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bQeWzOEbows

Edited to include YouTube link (visually, just a bunch of stills, but the audio is clean) for the benefit of the uniniated.

So many great songs and solos so far....!! off the top of my head....

Cream(Clapton)..... crossroads(live version)

Robben Ford ...... help the poor( and a lot of his other stuff...)

Floyd/Gilmour...... money (especially the live version.....)

Albert Lee.......... country boy....unbelievable guitar playing from
a good ol' boy from england

Van Halen......... beat it/jump... (both of them stopped me in my tracks when i heard them first....)

Steely Dan(larry carlton)...kid charlemane....(sounds like he can make his fingers turn inside out)

Mark Knopfler....(hard to pick just one)

Danny Gatton... (i know he's not strictly a solo in song but his version of 'in my room ' by the beach boys and a lot of the stuff on the '88 elmira st' album is brillant...)

Joe Satraini...(again not strictly a solo but he plays a melody or riff like a song structure a lot of the time with a solo in the middle and at the end.....'the extremist' and 'crystal planet' are two of my fav albums by him.....)

Richard Thompson....( very hard to pick just one...)

J.J. Cale....... ( the whole laid back vibe)

Jeff Beck...... check out a trad irish piece called 'Declan' he does on the 'you had it coming' album....all his stuff is amazing but he also had 'rod the mod' in the early days doing the singing..' the jeff beck bands version of 'i'm goin' down' is great....

SRV/Jimmy V....... where to start...

Eric Johnson,Pat Metheny,Santana.. the list could go on..... so many so little time......i'm also starting to get into the earlier stuff from the sun studios etc..and i've been checking out the like of James Wilsey who was Chris Isaak's original guitar player who now is doing his own thing as well and has a album out ................

I listen to the radio all the time, and hear songs all the time, not guitar-solos per see.

In a way it is hard to remember where to start.
Heard some songs a few days ago, and one was a Jane's Addiction one, and it had a great solo: Very driving and full on, and all the right notes while still taking lots of turns in the song. Sorry do not know title of the song. They are a funny band really, feel the vocals sit in a little strangly there.

Was thinking of some Police: "Driven to Tears" from Zenyatta Mondatta, great sound and choice of notes. Andy's comments on solos was: It needs to lift the song to a next level, a climax, just another point. When you listen to that one that is exactely what it does.

Other good solos of him during the Police: "Next to You" from Outlandos, "So Lonely"---now check this one, such a simple song, but try doing what he does here!!

Hey Franzoni, I see that you like Crystal Planet as well from Satriani. The sound of that album is amazing. Did you know that the songs go up chromatically in key? This does add to the feel of the whole album. Keys are very important.

Have you heard "Engines of Creation"? That is the one which came after Crystal. I like this one a lot as well, because of Satch playing with more different sounds.
Overal I feel he is great with his notechoise, but his sounds tend to stay the same. One of the reasons for this is because the music: If you write songs like that they beg for that sound. It would be good to try more different approaches to his songwriting. Okay I guess a lot of people would not like it, as it would become too different from what we are used to hearing of him. Anyway, just a thought eh?

Hi Dirk
Thanks for the link.
Cool & very laid-back, & nice tone as well.
I haven't heard of this band before.
