I'm kinda curious if there's any real life purpose to this pedal. I'm thinking it could be used as a kind of click track for the whole band instead of having to force the poor drummer into using earphones and click click click click...
Does it have any practical uses or is it mostly a new thang?

| Its like a choppy tremolo. I see its use for dance/trance. |

It sounds kind of interesting, but I think it's an effect you'd probably want to use sparingly... For recording you could probably use a software based sequencer to achieve the same effect. I really don't think I could justify the price.
Is it a bit like a digital version of the Moogerfooger MuRF? |

| the GT8 has it. it is arguably very accurately named. It slices your sound, way way way sharper than a tremolo. transamatics and ravers (do they still rave) will find it handy. |

Hi Guys
The GT-3-6-8-10, (not sure about the GT-5), all have slicer effects built in.
I used one on my new track called "Mud Slide" and on some other stuff I'm still working on. The link to that track, is in Off Topics: http://www.bossarea.com/forum/forum.asp?FORUM_ID=4
Dr. Bob Just built a new - Mud Slide ( New Track) http://www.bossarea.com/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=6701
Like any effect, I guess the trick/secret is using it sparingly, and in the right context/place. As you will hear in that track, and I believe it has more uses that just in Dance-Trance-Rave, or as starr36 puts it "transamatics".
I still believe that it's a very under utilized effect, a bit like the "Intelligent Ring Modulator" in the GT-8. (That one makes my herad & ears hurt some days).
But then Again you guys can all flame me, and tell me, I'm just too left of centre or experimental.
On of the things I really like about this place is the discussions that, pop up now & then. Not to mention all the interesting ideas & theories that you guys seem to have, about what gear & effects we use, after one of us posts some new music.
For me especially, I find that some of the ideas you guys have, about how we are achieving our recorded sounds, seem to spawn new ideas for me.
Regards Dr. Bob

Synchronise the slicer pattern with your bpm and you'll get some very usable sounds.
Add some smooth, high gain, distortion along with wild modulations and your audience will think you are playing some sort of synthesiser. |

It's pretty close the the MuRF. I have the MuRF & love it tons, thus indirectly I suppose, I'd recommend the SL-20. |

DeFrag,
I believe that the MuRF is completely analogue and I'm guessing that the SL-20 is a big bundle of digital circuits...
I Love my Moogerfooger pedals too, but they are a very different from Boss to use. Effectively you can "play" the Moog pedals in real time, using expression pedals, while playing guitar (or bass or whatever). Whereas, you'd usually set a Boss pedal and just turn it on or off... Is the MuRF playable like the other Moogerfoogers?
Would you recommend the SL-20 over the MuRF?

all the foogers have multiple expression pedal jacks.. I believe nearly every parameter is expressionable. Defrag will confirm!
I love the name "murf".. that's a noise my dog makes. |
