So I'm a noob... Found this forum, and hoping it can help me with pedal use. Just got my ML-2 pedal like a month ago... Love it for some pantera and other medal riffs, but looking to get the Pixies - where is my mind riff just so... Using an American fender Mahogany SE Strat, G60VR Pignose, ML-2 pedal... I can get it close, but distortion is drowning out sound a bit even on very low setting... Can I get this sound with this combo, or must I use another pedal/combo? Not much money to get any more pedals right now, so I'm trying to get as many sounds out of what I have...
I am also looking for some pointers to help get Pantera, metallica sound. Looking for help on set-up to play some Jazz (take five horn solo, etc..) on a strat, again, no money to get a Gibson/Les Paul(RIP) for blues/jazz. I play metal, Jazz, Blues, and Classic rock... Any wisdom will help, as I am still wet behind the ears with this stuff...

P.S. Really? There is a banana Llama pic? WOW...just WOW! |

Welcome to the forum from Ireland...
Can't really help with the ML-2 or the pantera/pixies sounds as i'm not a metal player, more of a classic rock sort of guy but on the jazz sounds try using a clean sound on your amp with a little bit of reverb if you have it...also try using the neck pickup or the neck/middle pickup together with the tone control rolled back a little bit to fatten the sound... add a E7#9 and your into jazz..... also good for some Hendrix/SRV stuff....youtube is quite good for some stuff as well..i.e. instruction and some lessons in different styles.......i've picked stuff up there myself and i'm playing over 25 years.... ..
P.S....yep the Bananalama is cool isn't it..my kids love it as well.... |

I L VE #9 chords as jazzy voicing to the 1-4-5.
Lately for even more flavour, I've been getting into neighbor Grace notes, Tritone substitutions, & Secondary Dominants. |

| I would really think about getting a new amp. maybe a mesa boogie. i play through one a few months ago. it has the fender clean sound, which is good for some jazz but has the crunch of a pantera or metallica sound, i don't think the pignose will cut it |

I think zerksies right you might want a mesa boogie amp. Also you might want to change the pickups from the stock ones, to custom ones for what your playing. |

Welcome to the forum :)
Both those bands use a softly softly catchy monkey approach to tone, High output pickups, an overdrive, and a bit of gain on the amp too all thrown together - 3 seperate stages of gain at least....
First I reckon you should replace the stock Fender humbucker with something a bit more muscular (Bill Lawrence are a good choice, the USA ones are pretty cheap too) or if you can't afford this, try mounting the stock one upside down for a bit more treble and bite on the low strings....
Turn the gain right down low on that ML-2 in the meantime and swap it for something a bit milder like an overdrive when money allows (OD-1; SD-1; OD-3)
Turn the gain up on the amp, maybe about half way - I reckon that Pignose could sound pretty fat with the right combo in front of it
As for Jazz...... ^^ whatever those guys said I guess I have no idea.... |

Errr ...sorry guys but blackrash said he was a bit strapped at the mo for moolah....i know that feeling... so the mesaboogie quadruple rectifer is out... but they do have a point..at some stage if you stay at this you will need to upgrade your amp to get the tones you want...crissydamage's idea is a good one...(he also seems to know something of the gear these guys use) ...i have no idea what pedals the pixes or dimebag used but you could try swapping the ML-2 locally for something else if it isn't doing anything for you....post some ad's up in rehearsal rooms, local shops, libaries etc and tell them what you want in return,be realistic..!! another boss overdrive or one of similar quality would be acceptable,if your not sure of whats been offered come back and write a post and we will try to help you out, everyone is in the same boat at the moment so chances are good for a swap, make sure or try to see if possible, you can play through whats being offered to see if it works and it's the sound you want.... ....also www.guitargeek.com is good for checking out the rigs and gear of your favourite players...it's a bit old and hasn't been updated for a while but most of us are looking for the older tones of a lot of these guys anyway...... ...... |

Great post Franzoni. I was going to suggest a Boss OD as well. I searched guitar geek and found that Joey Santiago used an OS-2.
I'd suggest that because it is a very versatile pedal, the Pixies used one, and they are cheep.
Great taste, Where is My Mind is one of my favorite Pixie songs.
By the way I get the same thing out of my ML-2, too much dist. I keep the dist knob all the way down. |

First off, really appreciate all the love you guys threw my way! It's nice to get info from a diverse range of players! I think I might invest in an overdrive 1 or 2 and see how that works out for me... I like the ML-2, but just way too much distortion. Hoping to get some good trade in value...
I also had some questions about a couple of other effects if anyone knows anything about Wah pedals and chorus/flangers....
I recently found what might be a steal on craigslist local... for a TC electric stereo chorus/flanger... I read reviews that say it is amazing! Also fairly expensive... I think I could get it for $100 or less... Anyone have any feedback on these? Also wondering about RMC wahs... I hear they are the best..? Should I wait and save for an RMC or does anyone know a good cheaper wah? Didn't like the dimebag wah (too much dist. I can run a dist. through the wah for this correct?), I did like the slash wah sound a little (only found it new for like $160 though)... I haven't had much luck finding wah pedals I can test out... recommendations?
Thanks everyone! |

that TC pedal is used by all the top guys in LA and elsewhere ..its the pedal form of the famous TC 1210 spatial expander which is a major piece of kit and now dicontinued....if you can get it for 100 bucks go for it... ..just make sure all is good and it's working for that price ....i use a standard Dunlop wah pedal..have done for years and it's great..i'm sure there is better out there but for what i do..classic rock it's fine... the RMC is a serious piece of kit and fairly rare this side of the pond..i'm jealous that this sort of gear is so easily available to you guys in the U.S......

Laurie posted a link to this already in another topic but it's worth posting here as at 0.45 in Johnson kicks in the TC chorus so you can get an idea what it sounds like going into a clean fender amp.... if you want the more earthy sounding analog chorus look at a CE-2 or some of the EH stuff...the Dod FX65 stereo chorus is also not bad..i had one years ago.. the only thing is i find the old Dod pedals a wee bit noisy compared to Boss/other stuff even in bypass mode but they are cheap and not bad sounding units but if i was offered a TC chorus/flanger for $100 i'd take it...my two cents......... |

ml-2
if you want a decent set up of distortions i recomend a keeley modded MT-2 metalzone for your pantera and a DS-2 for your rock. |

Alright... So if all goes well I will have both the MT-2 and TC electric chorus/flanger tomorrow for $130 ! Keeping fingers crossed that the gear is in good shape as it is a local craigslist purchase...
Thanks again for all the advice everyone! Banana llama for life!
