G'day kelmaur and welcome!

You are asking a really good question... and there is no single simple answer. Most of us do exactly what you propose, but the garage sale/flea market avenue doesn't really produce results for many of us. Pawn shops and eBay, plus local "buy and sell" ads are the best.

you're wasting your time going to garage sales. 95% of garage sales are by middle aged people who have never even picked up a guitar. i use craigslist, ebay if i really want a specific pedal and don't want to wait, or my local store has a consignment shop.

First time I ever went to a flea market I found me a very clean CE-1 for 30 euros ( the guy wanted 50 euros ) Third time I went there a DD-2 for 35 euros. Still go there every month in the summer been lucky twice, so maybe there's a third time.

It's your decision not to go to garage sales or fleamarkets but what if............

I normally go to the likes of the local buy and sell or gumtree....but flea markets/car boot sales/charity shops etc...always worth 5 or 10 mins of you time ..you never know what you might come across.....

Another good way is to just Google the name of the pedal you want with the word "used" in front of it. There are a bunch of small web sites out there that sell used and vintage pedals.

It's becoming very hard to find the old pedals at good prices. Most sellers know what they're worth so expect to look long and hard to find any bargains.

To find out what you should pay, go to Ebay and search "completed auctions". That will give you a rough idea about the different pedals worth. You can also look up the price on http://www.prepal.com/data/Boss.htm but I find Ebay reflects the price better.

It might be worth looking for the less popular pedals like the CE-3, FZ-2, HM-2 or HF-2. You can find them really cheap compared to some of the more popular models.

Just to spill my beans and enlighten you all. IT DOES PAY TO LOOK EVERYWHERE!!! Case in point, the Mu-tron III I picked up, paid $25 for it at a garage sale. He thought it was broke, guess what... He's a fu*#ing idiot, it works perfectly. Recently picked up an RV-3 in beautiful shape at a local pawn shop for $50. Those are semi-rare instances, but I don't think any venue is a waste of time given the potential of the reward.

Here is something to ponder.

Go to blue jeans store. Pay $90 for a pair of _____ Jeans. Take them home. Wash them. They are now used. They are now worth $5 at Value Village.

Go to sporting goods store. Buy Nike Skates for $390.00. Wear them one year. Forget about hockey, They are now worth only $45 (if that) at a sport swap 'play it again' thing.

Go to Guitar store. Buy a Gibson LP standard for $2500. 2 years later, you want a PRS. Your LP standard, is worth $1800 - this is not bad - you got a Jay Turser, Ibanez or any of those midrange Jacksons, OUCH kiss 1/2 your money good-bye the minute you leave the store.

There is GOLD to be found at Garage Sales, Flea Markets and the ones with MIDDLE AGED AND OLDER PEEPS ARE THE BEST becasue they are finally geting rid of the sh*t their teens left behind 20 years ago!!!!!

The trick here, is to regularly do "rounds" you got to go and don't waste your time in new subdivision with 30 yearolds and 2 kids. definitely hit the 'empty nester' neighborhoods. And goto pawnshops regularly especially the ones the owner sits behind the counter ... you strike a relationship with him, and they may even be happy to hold something cool for you (unlikely to get this at cash-converters or music goround) with eBay giving away the prices of things, you need to go where sellers aren't so savy (garage sales, flea markets and pawn shops that DON'T specialize in musical instruments.

Ok, now all my secrets are out. Yes you TOO can find a $10.00 MIJ DS-1, or a $39.00 DD-3 (big chip) A $49.00 DD-2, mesa mkIV + thiele cab for less than a grand!

Which reminds me, everyone's Christmas Visa Bills are due now so time to go shopping!
