The forum has been down a few times over the last 24 hours. Sorry about that.
I'm working on some pages on the site and the utility I use for security management is overly restrictive and insists on resetting every folder to no access without telling me. Now that I've found out I should be able to minimize downtime. |

| What I do get from time to time is that it is a little slow, have not really noticed this before, just more something of the last few weeks. I know I have not been around for a while, but still, it may be something to do with you having updated a lot of info and changes on the site. Not really a problem, more just to let you know as a kind of feedback. |

| The forum is very slow for me at most times, even at times of night I don't think anyone else would be on it. It used to be fast, but I think we've got a lot more users now, and a lot more people just browsing around for info, and linking to the site from other ones, that there's probably just not enough bandwidth to go around. This is actually why I haven't been on the site much lately at all, to where before I'd comment on almost every new post. I don't think the speed issue is something on my end, because it is slow whether I am at work or at home. |

There isn't enough users on this site to make any big impact on performance. The site is however on a server with lots of other sites and that's what's killing performance.
From time to time I complain to 1and1 that it's slow. They keep telling me that they've moved some sites off or moved bossarea to another application pool but any improvement is usually gone within a week.  |

No not experiencing any of what you mentioned above, but slowness..............things like putting up a post and having to wait for quite some time. Pressing exhit seems to work, but then the post is lost too. Okay not all my posts make sense, so really it may not matter all that much really................, but still, it is nice having the ability to post some stuff from time to time.
I know most of these problems are beyond Bossarea's control so really we just need to be patient here. |

When posting replies seem to take a long time, I think someone is doing a search. Searches always seem to take a long time to execute, sometimes even timing out. There's a lot of data to search through.
Whenever have a fairly extensive post, I'll do a Ctrl-A Ctrl-C & copy all the text to my clipboard first before committing the Post New Reply button just in case it fails for some reason & won't go back. |

you guys obviously know your way around computers..... . ...i'm a 'two fingers' merchant when it comes to typing..... ......don't worry about it bossarea i have a good memory,i can usually remember most of the post i wrote..... ...still a great forum... |

Great minds think alike....
I've been doing this, ever since I learned the Select All & Copy command Shortcuts.
I do this, not just here, but even before I commit to printing any document, as well as the save command.
Saved me from the  many times.....

Search is unfortunately rubbish. Searches always take a long time and most of the time they end with a timeout. I am tempted to modify the link to a google link instead. Searching google with site:bossarea.com will return results quickly but doesn't always find everything. |

Yeah, I've done a Google site-search sometimes since it uses their indices. I'm not sure how often they crawl (it would be interesting to know) but its probably close enough when your search is bogged.
You're using MySQL, right? I wonder, have you rebuilt the indices or compact the databases? They'll fragment like a hard drive.. |

| It's an MS Access database. I sometimes defrag the database but it's still pretty slow directly afterwards so it's getting less often. |

I used to run a forum in support of my Quake2/3 servers on my old Deathmatch Heaven site but it was CGI & didn't enjoy the scope that yours currently provides.
But being an ex-programmer & current SQL/web/network administrator I can say you're probably at the limit of the number of users & threads you can support without porting over to a more robust database. I imagine you probably already realize this of course 
In any case, thanks for giving us the home we enjoy. With your established user base, it sure would be a major chore to migrate us to something new. You would really have to stand up a fresh instance & I don't really see a methodology by which you could actually migrate the accounts. The die-hards would follow though  |
