Watch it bid to $300.00, too... "but it's ANALOG, man!"
It would still be interesting to track down where it actually came from -- is Hitone some sort of Japanese knock-off? The name looks more Japanese than Chinese to me -- and wouldn't the MN3005 indicate something that was built some time ago?
That board looks like late '70s / early '80s vintage at the latest to me, which would probably be too old for it to be Chinese -- but mabye Taiwanese? Those knobs look like the newer Boss ones -- but are they original?. And it looks kind of silly when you put it in between a DM-100 and a DM-300.
Wonder if Andreas knows anything about this device...?

Looks like you have some additions to make to your site:
http://www.hitoneelectronics.com/oc.htm
And I guess that it would have to be an Indian company to offer us a line of "gitar" effects. George Harrison could have done an endorsement deal.

Does Roland know about these guys? Licensing the "Boss" name and some of the product designs to them, perhaps?

They must have licensed the designs. Roland complained that Behringer copied their designs but theyir copying was innocent compared to what these guys are doing. The Boss logo alone should run them into big trouble unless they had a deal worked out.
Interesting to see the list of coutries they export to: Nigeria, Kenya, Uganda, Ethopia, Republic of Yemen, United Arab Emirates, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Sweden etc.
Sweden sort of doesn't make sense in that list. Apart from that it's countries where very few of the population have the means to buy Roland products. Perhaps they licensed the products for export to countries where Roland doesn't have distributors?
It's perhaps the same thing that Ibanez is doing with their Jem 333 model. It's made in China and nowhere near the quality of the other guitars of the JEM line but it's only sold in countries where they've normally lost out to counterfeit products.

I wonder if they care at all about the potential impact to their reputation for quality -- I guess that if the Hitone units stay out of the markets where standard Roland Boss products are sold, then they'll be okay. But what if these units really start showing up en masse on eBay, for example?
Those Hitone pedals don't look too promising to me on the outside, compared to the tank-like standard compact pedal case.

It would be interesting to get one just for the purpose of picking it apart to assess the quality. |
