Another good one! Tonight I opened up my brand new CS-3 and saw two noticeable differences. SN: CU 69598, which was May 2006.
1st, the mini PCB that all the pots connect to has changed just a little. The Tone Cap is now laid out vertically, rather than horizontally. No big deal. The pots look to be like the newer kind as well, with the green housings instead of the metal gray. Again, not that big of a deal. This may have been around for a couple years.
Here's the one that surprised me: R35 has a Diode and Resistor in series! Okay, we've all seen that before, but I've never seen one on a Boss pedal! I don't have a collection of Boss pedals like a lot of you, but usually I would expect the always anal Boss folks to change the PCB and label it. It's one of those s3133 or whatever the heck they use diodes. Orange w/ Yellow stripe, in series with the 330 Ohm resistor (I think. I need my magnifying glass, but the first two stripes were definitely orange...)
Ok, so I know WHOOPEE Who Cares, right? I haven't even plugged it in yet, but I'll let you know if I can hear any difference. I doubt it, since Boss wouldn't want anyone to hear a huge deviation from today's model vs. the earliest one.
Can anyone else verify the Diode in parallel on R35 so I know this wasn't a fluke? Sorry if this has been discussed already.
Later! |

| OK, so I'm anal and just got another one from Musicians Friend. This one's serial number placed it at Feb 06. No diode in series on this one, just the resistor. What the heck is up with that? |

the diode and resistor in parallel you are talking about is because that verison of the cs-3 is for use with an aca adaptor rather than psa.
There are a couple of different versions of the cs-3 but they are all nearly identical. Hope that helps! :) bw |

That's what I thought at first too, but that's actually not it. It's a fluke. I opened up 2 other brand new CS-3's from the same batch, (Serial #'s all dated around the same month/year) and that diode was not present on R35.
Here's how I know: The ATTACK knob on that particular pedal was acting very goofy. If it was below 12 o clock all the volume would disappear. As if the pedal was "dying." I removed that diode and just and all was well again. It didn't affect the power one way or the other: PSA, ACA, Daisy Chain, Battery, etc. That all worked fine before and after the diode was removed. |

Also, it was in series on R35, not parallel. Are you sure you're not thinking about the D10/R32 combo? I'll post a pic later. Thanks!
