Hey guys, great to join such a cool forum!

I love Boss compact pedals. Have a CE-2 chorus, and had a DM-2, but needed longer delay time so I got the DD-3 instead.

I got it on craigslist (mistake), and it worked for a week. Then I put it on the pedal board and tested it out more, and it made a loud woofing noise when I stepped on it to activate. Sounded like a bad cable, but it was definitely coming from the pedal.

I isolated it to something on the circuit board, nothing mechanical like jack inputs or loose wires. I believe I have an intermediate version, with the square chip and wires making connections.

As I was poking around and trying to find a component that was the culprit, the pedal was acting even more weird and noise, shoddy. Finally, it stopped providing delay tones. Now, the light turns on when activated, but no delay tone, just dry signal. Doesnt matter if its 9V battery or power supply.

I am afraid I may have caused a static shock to a chip or component. I have already replaced the pedal, but I also want to learn about this pedal and fix the problem. I have an EE degree, and access to an O-scope, surface mount soldering gear, etc.

Anybody have tips on where to start? I dont have a schematic, but I figure if I replace the main chips it could help? Anyone know where I can buy replacement chips?

Thanks,
Dre

Thanks man. I could not get a good picture of the components, but here are the chip names I have been able to read:

The big chip on the bottom of the board had these numbers:
R15229875
MN51010RBA

Then on the other side were these chips:
DV41464P-10
9728
74HC00AP
311D
JRC
7003D
HD14066BP
NE570N

Should I try to replace the surface mounted chip first? Where can I find these replacement chips?

Thanks,
Dre

Hi doctadre
Welcome to the forum from Australia.

Before you start replacing SMD IC's & other components.
It might be worth waiting a few a bit, & see if anyone offers any other insights.

Regards Dr. Bob

Hi doctadre welcome to the forum-

"I bought a DD-3, it worked fine, then I put it in my pedal board and now it doesn't" is effectively what you are saying......

I'm glad you posted this, because I have a very similar problem, now I have fashioned a (sort of) theory on why all these DD-3s keep breaking all over the world.

The pink back DD-3s and the late MIJ DD-3s in particular seem to be quite power supply specific (at least the ones I had were), probably the same for the grey backs too.

I had a (quite expensive) 'alternative' adaptor, worked on pretty much everything else, but not those. Don't ask me why, I have no idea.....I'd just get a loud humming noise and nothing else, tried a Boss adaptor and it was fine.......

Basically I'm guessing you've installed it into a board powered by a mickey mouse power supply and daisy chained it with a load of pedals from other manufacturers.

This probably killed the DRAM (IC-6) and explains why it was working sporadically for a while but making strange noises-

You carried on using it in this state, now you've taken out IC-3 and possibly more stuff too, now you have no sound at all-

Check the solder joints around the bases of these componants to see if they look a bit burned......

Now with mine I'm in the position where I replaced IC-3, now the delay is working again, but making strange noises and is very garbled-

I'm now awaiting a daughter board assy for IC-6, (they are quite pricy unfortunately) I imagine it will take a few more months for that to arrive as well as they are backorder mars....

I'm replacing the RAM because it looks burned, and makes sense to me that this is the next thing that needs to be eliminated due to the nature of the fault. I've not tested it at all so I'm not 100% by any stretch of the imagination.

Please, if someone thinks I'm chatting rubbish or has anything further to add please correct me :)

Thanks for the info. I used a Voodoo pedal power setup, so things were quite isolated. I also tested it with 9V battery and the power supply, with the same noise sounds happening.

Can you tell me where you get replacement parts from? I would like to try changing out the ICs you mentioned, but do not know where to get replacements.

Any other tips for starting on this troubleshooting repair?

Thanks,

Dre
