Some photos as promised ... not finished yet but i'm fairly well advanced....

sides and top plus pieces to reinforce the corners...i screwed and glued them using wood panel glue..or 'gun o prene' as we used to call it in the construction industry..extremely strong when it's dry....

blocks glued and screwed ready for the top and bottom panels...

shell of the cab assembled....

frame for securing the baffle board for the speaker installed

slightly closer pic to give you a better look...

My two helpers.......all us boys have to stick together in this house..... ..
tommorrow i will cut out and install the speaker into the baffle board and sand a prep the cabs for varnishing..... i post more pics as i go.....thanks for the interest.....

There about the same depth as my selmer combo amp give or take a couple of mm...all the research i did on the 'net i found conflicting reports on does depth and size matter... it's a little known fact(i certainly hadn't heard it before) but a Marshall 4 x12 is the size it is not on acoustic properties but on the fact that Jim Marshall could make one out of one sheet of plywood... and Leo Fenders fist efforts in amp building and cabinet building were made out of pine floorboards like mine as well..i'm making open back cabs so i don't think there is any real advantage in massive depth or porting the cabs etc.....these really are going to be onstage monitors,i'm sending the miked amp signal from the mic preamp and the balanced outs from the processor in the rack with take care of the stereo signal... don't forget the signal from my main amp will be it's natural sound including the speakers before it goes throught the processing in the rack..basically like a studio setup where the effects like delay and reverb are added afterwards...
Now i'm off to get some wood filler and countersink and fill the screwholes plus sanding and cutting out the speaker baffle... going to be a busy boy.... ....Aldi have a special on all this sort of stuff today.... Fate..? plus how many hardware shops do you guys know that sell beer..?..... .....i'll post more pics as i go..
Thanks for all the support and comments ..... |

Hi Franzoni
Just a quick question. Did you cut the timber by hand wit a panel saw? Or did you use a Saw Bench?
Remember! ..... Drink the beer after you have cut out the speaker holes. Not before...
Regards Dr. Bob PS Please Check your PM. |

Hi Franzoni, I like the idea, but how will you deal with a PA system. Are you gonna let the soundguy mic all speakers again, or will you just send 2 or 3 XLR outs to the PA from your rack? |

3 XLR's from the rack....the miked amp into the mic pre to desk plus line out from the mic pre into the XTpro...left/right balanced outs from the XT PRO with the effected signal also to the desk...unbalanced outs to the power amp and into the two cabs for onstage monitoring.....i'm the soundguy BTW.... ... i have a Sennheiser 825 for the amp and i also have a couple of AKG D770's the i might experiment with on the 1 x12's depending on how it sounds direct out from the rack.... i've always got good results from a mic on the amp through the PA and i think the speaker does play an important part of the sound....
P.S.... Tools used so far....
Tape Measure
electric circular saw
screw gun/drill
work bench
electric sander
jigsaw (for cutting out the hole for the speakers) |
