The bulk of mass-produced consumer electronics products today are disposable and have virtually no perceived "collectible" monetary value. Most of this is going to be things such as television sets, radios, computer monitors and hardware, automotive electronics, etc., which are produced in considerably higher volumes than musical instrument electronics. The latter is just getting caught by the broad brush, even though the amount of it that falls by the wayside is substantially smaller.

| I went to the local dumping site a month ago to get rid of an old computer monitor. There was a big pile of kitchen appliances, a big pile of computer hardware, a much smaller pile of TV/stereos and not a trace of anything that could make music. |

That much smaller pile of television sets is going to get much bigger once the switch to digital television from analog starts to take off within the next five years or so.
There will probably be converters that will allow the analog sets to continue to be used longer, but I would imagine that most folks will just switch, especially if the new digital sets are more or less in the same price range as the obsolete analog sets were -- and they're probably going to want the digital image resolution also.

We have had digital TV here(Australia) for quite a few years, but guess what? I don't know anyone that actually has one. They are damned expensive compared to the regular analog sets. Specially with all those cheap imported Chinese ones these days You can buy a "set top box" which converts the signal so it can be used with an analog TV.I think they're about $80 for standard definition and up to $200 for High def. The only people that seem to have gone for it are those with crappy reception, although soon you are going to have to have one as they are ending analog broadcasts..been running em concurrently for many years. So, yeah I guess there is going to be a massive pile of totally redundent TVs at the dump soon...
