Hi there guys! Well I'm in the market for a new wah... I currently have the standard Dunlop CryBaby Wah GCB-95 pedal... the sound is ok but maybe I find it a bit trebbly sometimes... The main reason I want to change my pedal is becuase I've had it for 2 years and the switch is starting to fail, and I know it's a matter of time for the pot to start failing too... So I don't want to spend time with a pedal that needs that kind of maintenance... I found the Steve Vai Morley wah that doesn't have an on/off switch and also doesn't have a pot (it's all optical), so 0% maintenance which is good in the long term... What do you think of that pedal?
Thanks for all the feedback

I like my PW-10, after a few tweaks it is great. 7 preset wah's, some distortions and the univibe phaser effect. For an all-purpose wah the PW-10 is a good pick. |

Holla, PEDALICTUS!!!
The Morley Vai wah its a good pedal for a modern wah sound, but if i were you, i would try to mod the crybaby, first. Maybe with a new Fasel inductor and a true bypass, you may change your mind. Anyway, giving maintenance, and squezing the best sound possible from our pedals is what this is all about |

I have a morley bad Horsie 2 and I hate it!!!! you should look at my one video on youtube
The reason i hate it is because the sweep range is too short and the contour part dosent make it any better it just gets noisy I mean the wah just sounds like wah wap thats it

I have had many wahs over the years, Vox (vintage and new), Cry Baby, Digitech, Colorsound, Boss PW-10. Of these the vintage Vox and in particular the Colorsound stands out. Great pedals and not very cheap today, look a flea markets! The new Cry Babys and Voxes are not very good, avoid them. PW-10 is quite good and very versatile, including a nice Univibe clone. Recommended! Last week I bought the best wah I ever had, its Cry Baby with exchanged electronics, pots, jacks etc. Its fitted with the Roger Mayer 9090A circuit, and have six different settings with different coil and capacitor variations. All of them sound great, much better than any of the cheaper wahs of today. Price paid, less than a new Cry Baby! Of course there are many new wahs that are very, very good, but they are not cheap.

I have a standard Morley Wah and really, really dont like it. It's been on my board for 6 months and the only time I've ever used it was when i tested it after mounting it. It's gotta go... i will probably break my rule about never selling any gear for this thing.
I await with great interest to see if there is any consensus in this thread about what to replace it with... |

vox has made my favorite wahs of all time.
i haven't played the newer ones, but even as of the mid-90's i felt their wahs were better than any non-boutique ones on the market.
much wider/fuller range/sound than the cry baby's.
morley has my least favorite wahs on the market mainly for their sound but also that on/off switch is a pain when you want to get your wah on quickly and immediately use it.

Hi Laurie
The forum keeps falling over & going off line. far too many times in the past few weeks & seems to be getting worse every time I go to post.
As far a wah's go, I have 8 wah pedals, some are duplicated. But from my humble collection & testing of other peoples pedals. I am sticking to the old Italian made JEN Crybaby's with a RED or WHITE FASEL inductor. And an older or reproduction pot.
The newer Dunlop GBC95's are too sterile & HiFI sounding great if your looking for super clean, but the older ones have a bit of distortion when you heel down (back off), when you really start to dig in & pluck, or hit the strings harder, They sound similar to, or as if a DS-1 on low drive settings, is connected after the wah.
It's all got to do with the phase distortion & signal levels. Hard to describe, basically they tend to growl a bit, when driven hard in heel down.
I have 2 vintage JEN's & a GBC95, you can get a really awesome sound by having two in a chain, & sweeping both But you will have to be seated, Unless you have excellent balance, & weight just 5 or 6 stone. You get nice sounds by doing different sweeps, or offset sweeps as well.
Regards Dr. Bob

the WH10 is an amazing Wah (sound-wise - not built-wise)
I just traded mine for a DM-2 - but that's just cuz I like delay more than wah sounds....

I have the Morley Steve Vai II wah and it's my favorite wah I've used. I wear out non-optical wah pedals too quickly, I've never had to fix anything on the Morley yet and it's about 7 years old. The best part of the Steve Vai pedal is that it sounds good on clean and distortion, crybaby pedals seem too harsh on clean.
I'd say it's more subtle than most wahs, when you want it to be. Using the volume boost will get it to be harsh like those "other" wah pedals. |

Thanks for all the responses! What do you think of using an autowah to replace the wah pedal? When I was looking for a wah two years ago, an autowah was what I really wanted, but I found my crybaby for cheap... and just bought it. What I like about the autowah is that they don't need maintenance... my wah has only had like 2 years of very little use and the switch is about to die... that's why I'm looking for other options including an autowah. |

My Ibanez WD7 Weeping Demon isn't spectacular but it sure is configurable! It sounds good too. |

Hi Laurie Congrats. Any pics? Does it have a Hotpotz 1 or a Hotpotz II? 100K or 470K ohms?
You won't look back, well maybe a little bit, when you have to replace the Pot one day. Still the pots are really cheap in the USA; We get hammered up to $69au in some stingy stores.
I order mine from dealers on evilbay.

Here's a few options... Look for and old GCB95/Vox crybaby and mod it to your liking Get a lucky score off of evilbay The FT-2 and AW-3 has an expression pedal jack for something tweekable
Haven't tried the AW3, but the FT2 and a exp pedal work nice and funky Got a vintage Vox wah for the same price as a current model of a wah my GCB95 revG was my first pedal, came with a guitar package so over modded, the tracks are lifting all over and resorted to some off board circuitry start here... http://www.stinkfoot.se/andreas/diy/mods/dunlop.htm
good luck

hi there ChristoMephisto! Well 2 years ago, I was going to the store to buy a mint new-in-box FT-2 they had in here for $ 70... only to find that they had just sold it the day before... I felt so frustrated! I was thinking on the DOD envelope filter... Is it any good? |
