I'm looking for a high gain distortion pedal, not for numetal (or any kind of metal). I have an SD-1 Eternity mod for my main solo tone, but I need another dirt box that will do distortion at low levels (without driving the amp harder) for special effects, infinite-sustain fake eBow stuff, and just times when the SD-1E just isn't dirty enough.
History has shown that I prefer distortion to fuzz. I've been known to get on well with vintage RATS, but space is limited and this new pedal MUST to fit in a regular Boss space, or a single-sized MXR box.
Gearmandude's MD-2 demo seems to show that the pedal does NOT scoop the mids, which is great in my book. (I'm an 80s guy - it's all about the mids). Am I getting the right impression here?
Anyway, who uses an MD-2, and for what? Compare/contrast with other pedals (not just Boss, if that's possible around here). Hint: I'd especially like to hear from anyone who can compare it to the RAT or the Marshall Shredmaster.
Thanks. |

I used to use one on my board, its a very warm distortion, i've heard people call it the 'MD-2 Mesa Distortion' because it emulates that tubey deizel/mesa sound.
I used it until I found what I was looking for. A REAL tubey distortion. Blackstar Ht-distx high gain tube pedal. Sounds amazing. |

| I will post comparison with RAT, but give me a little time as it may take a few days before posting results. |

Well, one advantage to the MD-2 I've found is it's dirt cheap. One just closed with no bids on FleaBay with starting bid of $28.50. At that price what have I got to lose? I think I'll grab one and try it. If it's not "IT", then I move on, probably to a BYOC Rat clone.
For 30 bucks, I can keep the MD-2 in a drawer for when my teenager wants me to bring da heavy. |

| For $30 go ahead and get one. It is definitely true distortion and not fuzz, if you don't like fuzz. It has a variable bass boost to allow the nu-metal sounds and it has that reputation as a pedal but I find it is more versatile than that. It can be used as a very functional "normal" distortion pedal. |

Surprised to hear the Rat and MD-2 in the same discussion.
The MD-2 to me sounds like a modelled version of Van Halen's sound on the track Running With the Devil. It's got loads and loads of gain for tapping and fun. It just sounds too light for chugging rhythm for me.
I agree with Laurie, a modded MT-2 would be awesome and would cover both rhythm and lead sounds. In the future, I'll go for that. Regret the MD-2 a bit. |

I think the MD-2 has a similar tone to the DS-1 but with much much more gain/bass/treble- I don't like it really myself as I think it sounds a bit damp and muffled on the low strings when compared to the MT-2 or ML-2. Its not an exclusively metal pedal, but it does kind of straddle the boundary between rock and metal and I get the impression it would sound a lot better if I put some fatter strings on and tuned my guitar down to C or B
Its probably great if you play such severely dropped tunings but I can't really find much use for it myself.....
I think you might be interested in the OD-2 Turbo Overdrive though from what you describe-
Really awesome pedal and if you love 80's guitar and 'its all about the mids' then it could be right up your street......I bet you'd really like that......
Apart from the legendary OD-1- they do sound far far far better but are expensive, rare and a total 'one trick pony' (but what a trick....)
OD-2s can be bought for peanuts if you hunt around ;)

| I use the MD-2 when I need to realy destort my bass, for solos and such, and it does that quite well. But I have never found a usable setting for guitar. |

| Found some mods on the web that sound pretty good for it. There was a fuzz mod for it that sounded good. Took some searching though. Maybe more will come out with time? |

Hi Noodler Any chance you might post & share the links for the MD-2 mods?
