My experiance with Boss dirt has been love and hate. As of right now, i'm down to a BD-2 as my main overdrive. I used to love it. But lately it's been stale to me. I was looking into a new overdrive and have a list of like 8 pedals. Everyone except the OD-3 is rather obscure/boutique. I'm kind of meh about taking the plunge with an OD-3. I've herad pretty rave reviews. But what i'm looking for is versatality/dynamics. I'm pretty sure the BD-2 is better for that or else they wouldn't make another overdrive that's main selling point is dynamics.

So my fellow Bossonians, how is this pedal, for realz?

The selling point is just that - a point for selling, i.e. a marketing angle. I think the OD-3 doesn't have the rep for dynamics of other overdrives because it has a higher gain range (certainly compared to the BD-2) and that by definition makes it more compressed. The BD-2 gets pretty distorted, but it's a nasty, edgy "fender-ish" break-up, rather than the more "marshally" fatter sound of the OD-3. I only tended to use my BD-2 for lower gain sounds, (because it sounded rough when full-on) and at this minimal overdrive, the sound IS more dynamic. I got rid of the BD-2 and only use the OD-3 now because it does high and low gain equally well, it's also half the price.[rambling]i also have a bad monkey which i prefer to both Boss ODs because it has treble AND bass tone knobs - Why don't Boss ODs have both or even 3-band?[/rambling].

OD-3's are very solid as a mild overdrive. their weak spot is that they can sound a bit muffled and suck treble.

there is a mod where you remove a couple of diodes that is supposed to reduce this problem.

comparing apples to apples, the OD-3 really only compares in the boss line to the OD-1 and SD-2 on crunch mode. if you drive a british high gain tube amp it's nearly transparent and will basically duplicate the gainer amp sound at a lower volume.

i've never understood the widespread fascination with BD-2's. they have very little gain potential and sound harsh in most applications if you try to push them harder. basically, i find OD-2/OD-2/OD-3/SD-1/SD-2 etc. can perform a similar function to a BD-2 when you dial their respective gain knobs back. however, a BD-2 cranked just doesn't drive very hard.

that being said, imo, the OD-3 is the best stock overdrive pedal in production by boss. it is not my favorite overdrive by them by any means, just saying in comparison to their other pedals on the market it performs its function quite well.

as for the bad monkey, i don't really compare it to the OD-3 or most boss pedals. most digitech/dod pedals do more coloring than boosting and i feel the bad monkey falls into that category. by coloring, i mean acting as more of a dirt box vs. pushing the signal harder and finding a way to break it up. while i think the bad monkey does a great job of providing a dirt box that sounds like an overdriven tube amp, i don't feel it has the same kind of boost/push characteristics more commonly found in most overdrive pedals. that being said, it does perform equally well at all volumes, whereas most overdrive pedals are very dependent upon volume.
