Hi,
The CE-5 article says the label of digital "CH-1" (wrong copy/paste from the CH-1 article ?) is gray...
But I got one CE-5 with serial IL92253 (feb 1999 according to the BOSSAREA serial decoder) and the PCB is printed "CE-5", not "CE-5A" and the label is... gray !?
Can someone post some pics of the components side of the PCB to illustrate here the differences between the two versions ?
Thanks ! Laurent |

The pages says that all digital CE-5s have a gray label. It doesn't mean that no analog CE-5s can have a gray label too. The dark gray label was, on the CE-5, introduced January 1999 so I'm confident yours is the older analog type. |

So i currently have a digital CE-5 and i have no problems with it BUT it's the only digital effect that has stayed in my collection. I sold all my other digital pedals because they messed up my tone. Now like i said i dont have a problem with the digital ce-5 but i know theres the analog version so i wonder what you guys think about the two compared to each other? Ill probably end up buying an analog to try but i thought id ask first. |

I've had both... and at the same time.
I wouldn't waste your money changing to the analog one (unless your a collector).
Sound-wise I could tell any difference. |

I, too, have had them both. Using an A/B switch to switch back & forth as you play, you will hear a subtle difference. The typical analog vs. digital stuff. The analog has less highs and a slightly "warmer" midrange.
I'm not typically concerned about the slight differences between versions of Boss pedals, but I kept the analog one because I could get the sound of the digital one from both my ME-50 and my GT-Pro. YMMV. |

i've used both. the digital ones don't sound bad, but there's some additional white noise that i've always felt passed through with it. the dynamic response is slightly different between the two and the digital one doesn't quite round out as well. the other issue i've had is that if you're playing scorching hot pickups, the digi one may give a lil clip distortion depending upon where it's sitting in the chain.

this is a good summary of it.

i preferred analog CE-5's to CE-3's but i've also only used mono setups. supposedly CE-3's wail when run stereo, but when run mono there was a slight volume drop when engaged. the "color" of the chorus is similar between the two as both will do a rotary shimmer as well as a true chorus tone. i've always felt both models gave a bit of artificial reverb when engaged but the CE-5 could be tweaked to a little "dryer" and more up front sound. i will say it takes about 5x as long to tweak your settings on a CE-5 as it does a CE-3. |

I found just the opposite. The one thing I found to be obviously different between the analog & digital CE-5s was that the digital one generated less white noise, especially with the depth turned up. |

You guys must be using them in very quiet enviroments...i find all my boss pedals either digital or analogue the most quiet of any pedals i've ever used for background noise..... |
