Please post all your influence here, you know bands or musicians that really influenced your playing in one way or another.
Mine are: Duff McKagan, I was heavily into GN'R when I started playing.
Jason Newsted, his stuff with Metallica was really great, actually entire Metallica has been a major influence when we started our first band.
Billy Sheehan, bassmeister extravaganza, very cool guy, I "borrowed" a lot of cool tricks and oddball techniques from this guy.
Lately, I listen to a lot of Beatles, amazing how Paul McCartney can make a song go in a certain direction without playing a lot of notes, now that's some talent.

as a "musician" (ha, ha!), most of my influences are somewhat obscure, but for guitar, the more recognizable would include Steve Jones/Sex Pistols (I taught myself to play by jamming to their CD), Pete Townshend, Tony Iommi, and lately Greg Ginn/Black Flag. I like all of the virtuoso-type players too (Hendrix, Vai, Rhoads, etc.), but if I listen to their stuff too much, it makes me want to throw away my guitars....

on bass, the list includes Steve Harris/Iron Maiden (mainly for inspiration -- I don't/can't play anything like him), Geezer Butler (see previous), Brian Ritchie/Violent Femmes, and Eric Avery/Jane's Addiction.

wow where to start? pretty much any musician from 1960-1997 who had TALENT!!!!!

Jason Becker, Malmsteen, Satriani, Friedman, Megadeth, Buckethead on the shred part

Floyd, Uriah Heep, Yes, EVH on the classic rock,

George Thorogood, Hendrix, SRV, Johnny Winter, on the blues end

i could make a list a mile long of influences. these are generally people that kept me interested in the guitar or i instantly wanted to learn their stuff and even stole a bit of their style.

hell i even listen to some rap, country and am starting to get into jazz. like i said as long as theres talent in it, i will like it.

If I went through all the different people I was way into at one time or another, I would be here forever typing. So I will just go over who I have really gotten into over the last few years as far as players, and this does not include bands that I am into, but maybe just don't see as an influence on my playing....That being said, here goes....In the past year and a half, my playing has been heavily influenced by Matt Pike of High On Fire and Sleep, Alexi Laiho from Children of Bodom, Pepper Keenan from COC and Down and Sonic Smith and Wayne Kramer from the MC5. Those are the main ones. I could go on and on, but I'll keep it short...

The players that's had the most influence on me are probaby

Jimi Hendrix
Mick Box
Jimmy Page
Steve Vai

I have other heroes that I rate as high as these but their playing hasn't inspired me as much as these 4 have.
