When you compare both Reverbpedals I hear the RV-2 as one of Boss's t earlier movements into digital technology, a move which started with the DD-2 and comes full circle with the RV-5 and DD-6. Listening to some of the earlier delays and comparing them to the later versions such as the DD-5 and 6 one can hear the improvement in their clarity and detail. Similar story for the RV-pedals: The older ones [RV-2 and 3] sound a bit darker and are not as clean. One of the reasons for this may be explained in this article here:
http://www.stinkfoot.se/andreas/diy/articles/DD3.htm
Just read what it says in the beginning, now the same principle may apply to the RV-2 as this could be an explaination why the pedal sounds darker than the RV-5.
Biggest difference is that the RV-2 has a delay which comes to live when you connect both outputs to two amps. I tend to add an anolgue delay in one of the outputs as well, just to add more mojo to the overal delay sound.
I hear the RV-5 as better quality in digital sound, a big move upwards really. The pedal sounds clean and clear, does not have any delaysounds, has only reverbsounds.
Tend to use the RV-5 more for studio-applications such as reverb on perscussion and snaredrum. Because of its better clarity I prefer the RV-5 for application rather than the RV-2, also the RV-5 has two in- and two outputs, is therefore more versatile in connections with a mixer.
Just for straight guitar and amp I really like the RV-2, probably because it sounds simpler, straighter and darker.
Just keep in mind the way I use these pedals, my feeling is that most people, when comparing both reverbs, would go for the RV-5 as it tends to be more impressive soundwise.
Any other takers on this subject as we have not discussed the RV's in great detail yet............................. |

'Dank je wel' Visserman for your comment, i will go for the rv-2 then i guess. Do you also have any experience with other reverbs like the holy grail?

No I do not know the Electo Harmonics Holy Grail. There are so many reverbs of so many different brands out there that it is almost impossible to know them all.
I have been playing for a long long time, and do not like reverb all that much. Bought my RV-5 mainly for recording, but because of my recent Boss-research phase I tried out the RV-2 and it made me rethink my believes about Reverb.
The A/B test in my previous post was based on using a testtone. Last night I tested both pedals with a guitar, and the differences are still there, but they are a lot less noticeable.
I do like the RV-2 delay, I know some others here have made comments about this delay as not being all that useful. All in all we have different tastes so you really would need to try it for yourself.
The kind of reverbs I know from experience are the ones from amps: Springreverb mainly, which I have on some of my amps.
The best reverb you can ever get is playing in a church. I had to perform for a wedding on classical guitar early March in 2005, and I really loved the reveb I got there. The guitar was only slightly amplified with a bassamp, just to get a bit more volume. Did not do much colouring on the amp, and did not use any reverb on the amp as well. All the reverb I had came from the churchhall.
During recording I prefer to get the reverb-sound from my rooms. All the different rooms in my house sound acoustically diffent. Have not done any treating as such, find them sounding good enough for my purposes. Only thing I do from time to time is cover up a glasswindow to deaden the reverberations a little.
