What kind of patch cables should be used for pedals, balanced or unbalanced?(don't know what that means). Expensive cables worth it?

Unbalanced mono cables. Stereo cables will not turn on the pedal. The input jack is a stereo jack that is wired so that a mono plug will "short" or connect 2 of the contacts together to complete the power circuit & turn the pedal on. If you plug a stereo cable into the input jack, the pedal will not work.
