Bought new last week - stock was probably a couple of months old (S/N decoder is down so I can't check).

Looks like we have a new change to the DS-1 opamp.

The unit with serial number qw77812 was produced February 2008. The unit is number 177812

I've got a similar question to sp-1 - why does the type of opamp make such a difference or, in idiot's terms (ie. for me!), why is it so important?

I've never understood this but then my knowledge of electronics only extends to knowing that there are a pair of -ve and +ve sticking in and out things on a battery - rubbish I know but I'm learning all the time

Thanks

They're changing that chip so often now, I'm losing count.
They changed it 2006 to NJM2904 and now they've gone and changed it again. It's getting hard to keep track.

Funny enough, this type of opamp is what analogman uses in his mods (link with photos posted on the mods thread).

I have currently a NJM4558L in my DS-1 and I love how it sounds, very smooth.

Well, we assume that a new op amp in DS-1 automatically degrades its performance, this could be the reverse. I will test a new one and compare to the older op amps when I get a chance.

I knew my new DS-1 from 2008 sounded different then my friend's DS-1 from 2003. In my opinion, mine sounds worse. I still need to get around to doing the Keeley mod for it.

thats also called an inline op amp chip. Boss has been doing that for a while. Analog Man changes that out to a JRC4558 chip thats not inline.
