i'm not after a volume-boost, i wan't to thicken up the sound and make it sing and sustain during solos, of course when i do that the volume will be raised a few notches aswell, but that's not what i'm mainly going for...
so, would anyone of the pedals i mentioned be suited for that?
i mean, someone said Dist+, but the old ones doesn't work with power adapters, so i'd have to get a reissue, does these sound as good as the old ones? is it the same construction?
the OD-3, is it the same as an OD-1 but with a tone-knob?
i'm kind of out to get a pedal that has been on the market for a while (at least since the 80's because i have some wierd fetish for the 80's. So all the gear i use have to be things that where availible during the 80's). |

nilo:
i don't know if the OD-3 will have enough gain to it unless you are playing at extremely high volumes. i've found OD-3's tend to behave best as a bit of a kicker to get a tube amp over the top, but they don't have tons of chunk/sustain.
i believe a current distortion+ will do what you are looking for.
from boss's line you are probably looking at stuff with more gain potential than an OD-1/OD-3 (these pedals are more "bitey" than smooth). SD-2, OD-2, OS-2, and SD-1 come to mind as those that have a bit more smooth fuzz to em but still retain an overdrive tone. OD-2's and SD-1's will occasionally struggle with volume boosts if you have hot pickups.
there's a handful of DS-1 mods that would probably work out as well.

| it has no clarity what so ever, it does not improve tone at all. it is either to muddy or to tinny if the pedal had some midrange to it. it might be a good pedal |

i have that thought about a lot of mods that don't either:
a) increase the gain potential by swapping to grittier clipping doides b) increase the "bite" of the drive tone via op amp replacement.
seems that a lot of mods seem to search for the magical tone but kind of neglect what the pedal is supposed to do. |

Hi zerksies
Sorry to hear about your disappointment with the above mod.
I get called many names, anal being the most common, for being really stubborn about not modding my pedals. I have have learned from similar experiences, that it's the one thing, that I now try not to do.
I keep a set of untouched-unmodded pedals, I paid good hard money for them the way they were shipped from the factory. (Period)
I will not dispute that there are a number of really great sounding mods, floating around in the cloud (Net). The Melanhead DS-1 mod, being one of my favorites, & Lauries Fav, the SEM. The tone roll off cap for the DD-2. Lauries CS-3 mod. And many others.
But in the end, that's what they are --- MODs They essentially are no longer the pedal you purchased, but something else.
I will sometimes search out a CHEAP used, or new pedal that I will play Tech-Guy with. But I find, that qnce I have the pedal, next to my hot soldering iron, the Stubborn-anal, don't mod-it voice takes over.
I have seen many disappointed muso's leave pedals in the bottom drawer, or cupboard, where they sit for a long time, sometimes never to see daylight of a guitar chord again.
I sometimes, think about making/buying another collection of pedals that have been modded with the most common, sought out & talked about mods. Yes (doctor) the GAS pains really get that bad from time to time...
I would probably be the only one place, where myself & friends could sit down & listen to all the mods, & then make comparisons amongst all the modded & unmodded pedals. over a few Reds or beers or course, maybe even a BBQ.
I guess I went off topic a bit, but I find that there is more disappointment than praise, of many (not all) mods.
In the end, it's like my usual disqualifying note. Tone is very subjective and individual.
I hope some of this made sense.
rant mode off Regards Dr. Bob

Me too Dr. Bob. All my mods have been done to "second" or "sandpit" pedals - preferably a dog I bought cheap. My rule is don't mod it unless I have the same one in better condition that I am going to leave original. At the very least, this gives a "benchmark" to compare the mod to.

I do understand that modding can make pedals better. But it's then no longer that pedal, it's something completely different in a Boss XX-X (other brand) case.
From what I understood, You were not pleased with, & didn't like the modded pedal, As I understood it, you were saying that you felt, that you wasted your money, or would have wasted your money, if you didn't have an option to return it. That's what my reply was based on.
But I now see you meant something different, It's probably cos it's late here, but I still miss your point.
You now seem to be saying that modding makes a good pedal better. But in your case the modded SD-1, was in your words: quote:

Please don't think that I'm flaming you, it's just that you seem to be arguing on both sides.
And I was expressing "My non-modding approach" to the gear that I buy & collect.
peace...
