the only fx-related book I have at the moment is "The BOSS Book -- The Ultimate Guide to the World's Most Popular Compact Effects for Guitar" (Hal Leonard, 2002). the Hal Leonard imprint is an English printing of a book that was obviously first intended for the Japanese market, but despite the occasional typo (did the DS-1 really get discontinued?!?) and sometimes unorthodox page layout, there's a wealth of info here, and I think it's worth your $15-20. there's also a CD included that provides a sort of Whitman's sampler of Boss pedal sounds. I don't mean to endorse amazon.com over anyone else, but click here for more info:

"The Boss Book" is great!

Also recommended:
"Guitar Effects Pedals - the practical handbook" by Dave Hunter
"Stompbox" by Art Thompson

I haven't read or even seen the one that AnalogMan sells, but I'm sure it's quite good.

For general information abuot how effects work I like Craig Anderton's Electronic Projects For Musicians. It's a DIY book about building effects so there's no mention of Boss or other brands of pedals.

The Analogman book is wonderful! It covers more of the vintage segment of effects along with some more current boutique lines ( Way Huge, Z Vex, etc. ) It's Boss coverage would be described as weak at best, but then we have Bossarea and the Boss Book for that! Just be prepared to start drooling $$$.

I just got the "Guitar effects pedals-a practical handbook by Dave Hunter and it way more informative than "Stompbox" by Art Thompson.
Now I just have to get The Boss Book, DIY electronic projects for musicians, and one other one and I'll be good for a while.
