I have an OC-2 that I'm looking to trade (not the point of this post), and the label has come off due to Velcro. I still have the black MIJ label, but I'm doing the trade via the net. I think the other guy is going to want additional proof of origin.

Is there any way to confirm via gut shots? A specific pbc board, chip?

I don't want to mislead anyone.

MIJ should have the paper label in the battery compartment... it says "JAPAN" on the label.

Is that true across the board?

I'm pretty sure that I have some MIJ pedals w/o the paper S# inside.

I'll have to check when I get home to confirm.

Yeah... I believe all Japanese pedals should have either the paper label or an ink stamp.

There are some late Japanese pedals with the AA00000 scheme.. I have a DD-3 (MB8xxxx), GE-7 (NB3xxxx) and PH-2 with back-label serials but are still MIJ. (In the case of the PH-2 the number is worn off but the rectangle is still there).

More fun transitional serials. I wonder if we'll ever get a clear picture of all the schemas..

I read somewhere* that MIJ pedals have a grey battery clip and MIT pedals have a black one (this is true for all my pedals thus far). So assuming the clip is original (you can usually tell if someone's resoldered), perhaps you can tell that way?

*I know that "somewhere" is not the best source....

Yep - my PS-2 is DC8xxxx - July '91. Grey battery clip, blue label with small silver rectangle where the (faded) serial number is printed direct onto the label. The stickered baseplate serials seem hardier.

The OC-2 production was moved to Taiwan early 1989 so all Japan pedals should have the serial number in the battery compartment. I got an early Taiwan model with the serial inside so dno't think there's any MIJ OC-2s with the serial on the bottom label.

If you want to know when the pedal was made, take it apart and look at the ICs inside. There's a Toshiba TC4013 with date code in the form YYWW on it. The one from my OC-2 has 8917 on it meaning 17th week of 1989. 17th week is April-May, the serial number is ZA67188 which is September 1989 so it matches up pretty well. It also has a black battery clip which supportes the black=taiwan, gray=japan theory.
