And why is Kurt Cobain on nr. 12? Sure he gave music a kick in the butt back in the early 90s, but quite frankly he was but a moderate guitarist. |

Its Rolling Stone, not Modern Science magazine...what was it Frank Zappa said about music journalists? "Most rock journalism is people who can't write, interviewing people who can't talk, for people who can't read."
I don't know why he's 12th either, but if I had a dollar for all the high school/college rock bands I have seen in the past 15 years that have singer/guitarists who have obviously been affected/influenced by Kurt in some way, then I'd have a few extra hundred dollars...So I will admit he's been influential to more than some, but in the top 15 of all time? |

steve vai can stay out...
and the reason sonic youth/kurt are in is not cause of their chops but because they were unique and had a huge impact on later players... |

I think Heart and Soul has a good point there...
If guitar playing were merely about being technically good or worshiping only "good" guitarists I never would have been interested in playing myself...
I understand that Vai is a great guitarist but I have absolutely no interest in his work.Kurt Cobain (love him or hate him) was a huge influence on my guitar playing... and yes I'm not a particulary good guitarist myself. However, I enjoy playing so who cares?
For me Cobain belongs in that list. |

I am not even talking about worshiping status. How does Ike Turner end up on this list and why does he rate Higher then David Gilmour.Gilmour is a way better guitar player and has been more influential then Ike Turner, has anybody ever heard of Pink Floyd.I would even say he rates higher then the guys of sonic youth, who are in the 30's and gilmour at 82.If i was to compose a list of guitarist I would include the gods and the peons. Some of my favorite guitarist would not even make the list like Junior Brown or Jim Campilongo they are both great players but have not been very influential. I think i need to create a list |

Steve Vai may be recorded as the fastest guitar player to ever live but i don't know if i would mark him as the best... never seen him go from REAL finger-picking classical music to a raging lead and back and forth |
