It's been a weird week on eBay.
Just out of curiousity, I looked the other night to see what my DOD FX-17 would go for. It's just a wah/volume/expression pedal, and the wah is pretty terrible sounding. So basically, nothing fancy. I bought it for $10. An auction ended last night for one in as good of shape as mine (beat the fuck up) for $163.00. There was another one on there with a BIN of $150. Am I missing something? |

Chris,
It said, "and is in Godd working condition." I guess they were paying for miraculous guitar playing improvements.
But on a personal note, now I'll NEVER be able to get that crazy thing. I'll have to build it for sure now. I guess that's not such a bad thing....
Grace and peace,
Steve

I would really like to take a shot at building that Tonepad clone sometime.
I talked to Steve at Small Bear, and he's supposed to be getting some SAD1024A delay chips in soon. That's 95% of the battle right there. The rest of the project is all easy to get and inexpensive. And the audio path of the original EM is supposed to be superior to both the one on this auction, and even the Deluxe. But the Deluxe's delay clock is apparently superior the original, so the Tonepad clone is theoretically the best of both worlds.
What's weird is that there was another auction going for the same pedal ending later than this one, and it had only bid up to $61.00 last time I looked. For some ridiculous reason two guys just bid this one particular EM up into the stratosphere, and I just can't understand what would have possessed them to do it. The original non-Deluxe in my view is inferior to the original Deluxe (I'm not sure how the reissue Deluxes compare, but they're a completely different circuit with a different delay chip).

I figured I'd just build it with the MN3007. I don't think the SAD1024 has any particular "Mojo" on its own. You heard anything to the contrary?

You know, I never thought of that until just now. I suppose that if you were building your own PC board, you could pretty much substitute whichever analog delay line you wanted.
It's a good question -- if the rest of the circuit were identical, and the delay lines had the same number of stages, would there be any audible difference...?

No joking here, seller tells us: 2x9= 18, now that must be correct eh??!!!
Crazy Price?? For some people it grows on trees!! others like to bath in it while the rest still has to maintain a dayjob to pay for the rent, morgage, childeren's eduction, and when all those obligations have been met, then, only then, there may be some money left to treat yourself to a new pedal. Oh forgotten to mention that for some of us the "upstairs department" works in a really funny way, but that may be better left for another post.
