HAHA, that's a good one.
Philosophy 101 by me ...
Try this ... we all come into the world with nothing, and guess what, we leave with nothing.
Also, happiness and contentedness cannot be obtained by material wealth or financial gain (btw those are nice to haves), but, it is indeed a state of mind. If you don't believe this, read the first section of "Man's Search for Meaning" by Viktor E. Frankl. Also, I read an article on ANGUS REID who seeing the end of the telephone polling industry IN 2000, sold his company for $100MILLION and still complained that life was empty, so he became a strategist for his 27 year-old son's software company. I don't know about you, but you'd think if money would make you happy, $100Million oughta do it.
Finally, think of how you are planning to "save" for retirement. All those years of working and hoarding money actually create's a poverty complex (I won't have "enough" to retire on) and funny thing, all these people DIE RICH, and leave it to spoiled grandchildren who burn through it all in a few years.
SO THE SOLUTION - ENJOY YOUR PEDALS, PLAY THEM, WHILE AND AS LONG AS YOU CAN, THEN, JUST GIVE EM AWAY. YUP, JUST GIVEM AWAY, HOPEFULLY TO RELATIVES WHO APPRECIATE THEM, WILL USE THEM, GET A GOOD VIBE FROM THEM, SO AT LEAST ON YOUR DEATH BED, YOU CAN SEE THE WONDER IN THEIR EYES.
ELSE, THEY'LL JUST GET AUCTIONED ON EBAY!!!! |

Yes, we are all mental. Collecting is really a form of insanity. For ages I collected absolutely nothing and claimed that people who collected stuff was crazy. I knowingly started collecting Boss pedals thinking that everyone who collects something is nuts and I guess that makes me even nuttier
Oh, by the way. I'm also collecting Ferraris. So far I have... 0

I'm gonna leave all my pedals to my kids (when I have a couple) and if they sell them I'm gonna haunt them and throw crap around un til they get them back. |

Great idea, with enough I'm sure we could imagine all sorts of things
In an earlier thread we calculated how many Boss pedals it would take to create a coffin. I guess that's how my pedals will eventually end up. It would be a more solid grave than the pyramids of Egypt |

From the age of eight up till about twelve I used to collect stickers, this was during the 70s as stickers were quite common in those days. I also had a few friends who did the same thing. Togehter we used to go out into shops and just ask the owners if they had any stickers for us as shops used to hand these out freely. On one afternoon one could collect quite a lot of stickers, the spare ones you could always swap with your friends and the new ones where added to the growing collection. I can remember that we use to count them as well, and because I had started late in the game my numbers were well behind some of those of my friends.
At some stage I started to develop a theme in my collection: Anything to do with Airshows and Figherplanes. Reason for this was that my mum used to work at an airport and she would get into contact with people who put up airshows and usually they left some stickers behind them for me. Was invited to come along to a few airshows. All in all a lot of fun and something which let me into different hobbies and interests.
I think the knowledge of the item adds to the desire to collect, it may be part of the completist-idea which lives in some of us, this may go along with "The older the better", "First issue" scenario [being very happy with a silver screw, momentory switch Boss pedal, only to discover they almost sound very similar to the recent pedals........]. Before I knew about this website I only had the recent pedals. My knowledge about the older pedals grew at the same time as my collection of these pedals, funny really...............even had moments I felt guilty about it, but not for long as there is no need for guilt in our short lives here!!
Does one feel happier afterwards? They could all take the pedals away and I would still feel the same. Have to admit I do like the pedals, do use them a lot more, and have developed another take, attitude if you like, on the use of certain pedals. True we collect items you can use, would not like the idea of buying pedals just as decorations or artifacts.
With the growing collection comes also the desire to know more about the history of the pedals, the history of the company, and all of this can be put into a wider perspective [in our case of the Bosspedals, the development of Japan as an electronics designer nation from the late 70s onwards] One starts to see links in other areas of life: The colours people liked in the 1980s, the sounds on recordings which were fashionable, being aware of any of these issues comes from collecting and research of the period when these pedals were made. Cannot deny that all of this I truely find enjoyable and fascinating at the same time. A little bit mad? I guess collecting pedals is not any worse than falling in love for the scraps of paper where one writes the intial stages of his songs on. What do you keep those as well...........??!!.... Well no, but I do like them and do find it sometimes hard to thow them away. It is almost like you have made a connection with that piece of paper for the time when you were working on the song. |

Your last point is very interesting. It sometimes feels like I'm not really collecting Boss pedals. Instead I'm collecting the history and knowledge about them. I'm just as happy if I get hold of an older catalog than I am if I can add another pedal to my collection.
In addition to Boss, there's Roland and it's history. In a wider perspective it's Japan and it's musical instrument and electronics business. All very intersting but when the research area is wide you can't dig very deep and I really like getting down to the matter of different screws and knobs so concentrating on a small corner like Boss products is enough to keep me happy. |

Your right there Bossarea, it is all about life and its different aspects and not really about a particular pedal.
And yes with Boss being part of Roland it may be better to specify to the Bosscompactpedals and get to the nitty gritty with them. Interesting to notice that over a timeperiod you start to see so much more [and hear as well].

I admit to buying due to OCB. LOL! Like, I never use distortion boxes, jus overdrives, but I did just buy 3 distortion pedals just because they were MIB with all papers, are out of production, Boss, black and at a good price. (An HM-2, HM-3 & MZ-2) I will never use them, but I have them....just in case! LOL! |
