heyy guys, i was thinking. all my pedals are stock, and after trying some modded ones at the local music shop it turns out that i actually perfer to own the un-tampered tib-bits of hardware, so i bought my pedals are NEW from www.musicianfriend.com and i've been really happy. i have read from different sites that you can actually get the same results of a modded pedal with a combination of stock pedals so it doesn't really matter. for example, to get the tone from a Keely modded MT-2 all you have to do is own a stock MT-2 and use it in conjunction with a compressor, noise supressor and a seperated band equalizer... is that right? please correct me if i am wrong yes i perfer a vigin, untouched piece of metal than a surgically enhance sub-companied artwork. there i said it. lol thanks! -steve |

Ha ha ... this is going to be a slippery slope of a post.... ...all my pedals are stock also..mainly because in ireland we don't have access to keeley/analogman etc..too easily,i know some guys here have done mods that they love and some haven't...don't know about using the other pedals to acheive the same effect but they would change the the tone of the original pedal especially a GE-7....i'm sorta on the fence with this one because people here that i respect have done mods and said they were great and i know Boss the same as any other major company that mass produce stuff will sometimes go the cheaper route on components like everyone else so changing some of this stuff out has to make a tonal impact.... from what i understand from the posts by our brethren who like to mod,is the main tonal impact with a lot of this is the change of chip and type of clipping especially in overdrives etc.. rather than the cap changes...i'm sure Laurie or Christo the rest of the guys in the tech area would enlighten you further.... |

Hi ovrdrv123 Welcome to the forum from Australia.
Tone is such a subjective & personal thing.
There are many people that will give you reasons for both sides of the Mod discussion. And there will always be those that just love to tinker, for the sake of tinkering.
And as Franzoni already mentioned, there are times, that changing out some of the components will yield a much lower noise floor on some pedals.
There is no reall black & white, or right or wrong answer here. Just the personal tone preference of the individual's ear & preference for some particular type of tone.
Why else would there be thousands of choices of different dirt & other pedals on the market.
As an example: Some of my friends have more than a 100 different types of dirt pedals, and they will always by another dirt box in the search for "That Tone"-"That Sound" making their collection 101 or even 201 dirt pedals.
I'm sure some of us here on the forum know the situation all too well..
Regards Dr. Bob |

Stock.
Can't be bothered modding them. Differences are minimal anyway.
If It came to the point that a pedal was unusable in stock form, I'd just buy a different brand. |

Thanks Dr. Bob, it's a privlage to be here. yea, i only use a BD-2, OD-3 and an SD-1 for boosting. i also have the FBM-1 but only use it for equalization on it's clean side. i geuss i just prefer to have something straight from the factory, brand new-ish. |

You're missing out if you don't open yourself up to the older BOSS pedals. You'll pay more for them, and they will rarely be factory-new, but the difference in sound - even in the same model pedal - can be significant.
The only problem is once you start appreciating them, you will drive yourself crazy trying to find them, and bankrupt yourself when you do. But there are worse ways to go. |
