Just finished a couple of FA-1 clones for myself. Stompable, with true bypass.

I really like the way they came out and the way they sound, but it was WAY too much effort! (days...)

Beautiful! Did you simply spray paint those or what?

I assume you left copper traces & simply soldered over those right?

Thanks all!

Defrag:
- the boxes come pre-painted in various colours (powder coated) from Small Bear. I chose the white/black theme because it thought it looked "clean".
- yes, the traces are "tinned" copper. I usually do that in case the fabrication process has left a hairline crack in the copper. The optical transfer of the image can be a little tricky.

I've played with the FA-1 a bit now and I can say that I probably wont be able to live without it in front of my Fender from now on. Just brings it to life! If you have a Fender, you gotta get an FA-1.

Not such a difference in front of the Marshall though.

Best position for it (no surprise) is directly after the guitar - the FA-1 almost completely removes the load from the pickups. Current setup is:
Strat - FA-1 - A-B switch (A=pedal chain, B=TU-2) - MT-2 - etc etc.

Wind the distortion down on the dirt box, and the volume, treble and bass on the FA-1 up a little and it brings out a really nice Fender-y dirt with a little colour from the dirt box plus the Fender pre-amp overdrive from the increased volume.

Very nice...

What do you use to design your PCB layouts? And is that normal copper etch stuff?

I use a freeware program called "FreePCB" for the layouts. It's the right price and it works just fine.

Boards are etched normally - then tinned (tracks are soldered) then the flux and resist are removed with flux remover.
