i just bought a vintage BLOCK logo MXR PHASE 90 off ebay (haven't got it yet). The year of manufacture, according to the seller/pot code is 1979.
Here is a picture of the circuit board:

Now here is a picture of a vintage SCRIPT logo phase 90, made in 1977

What the heck is the difference?
The later vintage BLOCK logo boards (still owned by MXR - pre-dunlop) did look different, something like this (circa 1979):

And the even later BLOCK logo boards (still owned by MXR - pre-dunlop) got a complete overhaul, dropping the single 6 opamps and replacing them with 3 dual opamps, among other things:

so my question is... what exactly have i purchased? cheers to anyone who can shed some light on the matter :) |

i should probably also add, that this is an EVEN older circuit board, from 1974:

So does this mean that there was a transitional period where SCRIPT and BLOCK logo Phase 90's had the SAME circuit board/same chips?
i'm thinking maybe late '77 to early '79 ?
If so, does that mean that there are varying levels of "collectability" among vintage SCRIPT logo Phase 90's?
this is all doing my head in :( |

where to start....?? ..i understand your problemo bro'..but i can't advise you as a collector only as a guitarist..trust your ears and go with whatever you think sounds best to you..as far as i know most collectors and musos swear by the script logo version as being the best, but i think a lot of the hype surrounds eddie 'van the man' halen and dave gilmour their legendary use of the script logo MXR phase 90 and flanger(eddie used both i think)..to be honest i'm not a great believer in a lot of this stuff any more about certain caps or resistors creating a certain sound..i think if a pedal gets a sound your looking for it's done its job...i know i never sit still when it comes to my gear but the reason i'm looking for new sounds is i like to think i'm always evolving as a person/musician/guitarist...
P.S....as you can see i not a very technical person ..i'm sure Dr Bob or Stinkfoot could be more detailed in the explainations..... |

short answer; yes. there are some pedals with script and block that are the same. some block logo ones have the script logo on the bottom plate. i should also ask if the block one has a led or not? |

nope, no LED on the one i bought. looks like i was lucky enough to buy an early BLOCK logo phase 90 with the same circuit board as a later SCRIPT model.
i think that would be a fair statement? |

| what a bargin! i got my ph1r for $60 off ebay. steal at that price, but nothing compared to a vintage phase 90. one of the guitarists in my band picked up a script logo p90 at a garage sale for $20 or something stupid like that. the dude had bought it brand new and it had been sitting in its original box since the 70's! |

I have an old scipt version that I bought on EvilBay real cheap. They said it didn't work. One output jack wire had come loose. I resoldered and TADA, a fully functioning script Phase90.
The real difference, in my mind, was the old script versions have a real rugged switch that was totally separate from the circuit board and the new Block logo versions had the switch soldered directly to the board. This causes mechanical stress on the board and causes all sorts of problems. Just my 2 cents worth. There was definitely a difference in sound, although, truthfully these ears preferred the Block to the script. |
