Anybody have production volume figures for Boss pedals? I'm kind of curious as to how many of the rarer ones were made. The Boss Book says over 7000000 sold. That would have been as of late 2001 or early 2002. They had 6000000 sold in 1998. They also list the top pedals by production volume (MT-2, DS-1, DD-3, GE-7, HM-2, BF-2, SD-1) but they do not give any actual production figures for individual pedals.
For pedals like the SG-1, SP-1, VB-2 how many do you think were made? Less than 10000 each? Maybe 20000 tops? |

There's no official production numbers anywhere but since 1989 there's a lot that can be figured out from the serial numbers. Some pedals like the DS-1, CH-1 and MT-2 has had their serial numbers roll over from Yxx9999 to Zxx0000 and that only happens every 260000 units.
I've gathered a lot of serial numbers trying to figure out monthly production averages but I'm not that fond of Excel so I haven't gotten very far. I've looked a little bit on the years 2000-2002 and found some monthly averages
DS-1 4000 MT-2 5000 CS-3 1500 CE-5 1000 CH-1 1000 TU-2 2000
For the others I have too few serial numbers to say anything specific. The numbers may also be plus/minus a lot as they're based on less thatn 10 serial numbers.

| Thanks for the reply. I guess there is no way to know the production totals for the older pedals. Any estimates on how many of the SG-1, SP-1, and VB-2 were produced? Is it safe to say less than 20000 of each? |

Your guess is as good as mine. They each had a 4 year production span if we're going to believe what Boss says. Production numbers were much smaller in the late 70s/early 80s compared to today and none of the pedals you mention were big sellers. If we say they made 200 per month we end up with 2500 per year and a total of 10000 over 4 years. It's my best guess |

Yeah, my guess was also about 10000 each total production. Out of those I wonder how many survived. Got think at least a few SG-1s met an early ending due to frustration.

I suspect 99% are still around. It's so hard to destroy a Boss pedal that it's more likely that a lot of closets worldwide contain hidden treasures. |
