Thanks doc.... we also do a couple of numbers by some great aussie bands, Midnight oil and AC/DC but i don't have them on video yet so i will try to see if i can get someone to tape a gig and post them for you....
I checked out Paul H on the bozouki.... ...sounds like jimmy page on the acoustic version of 'gallows pole'.....one of my favs by led zep,i think you and our bass player would get on great as he's studying a two year course on irish music at the moment fulltime and learning the mandolin..... |

Hi PaulH
Some very nice tones in your playing on those videos.
There is a Greek guy at work - who plays Bouzouki. The traditional "Gourd type body", with a million Mother of pearl inlays.
I have had a few goes trying to play it, when he brings it in. It's not that easy to play, & Smoke on the water, sounds strange. Just kidding...
I guess it's knowing the different tunings. I finger pick alternate tunings a lot, but it was still difficult.

Most times I tend to use standard irish or mandolin tuning (low to high being GDAE)... think of it as an upside-down bass. It's dead easy to work the chords out, and most can be played with two-fingers.
I do use other tunings on it such as ADAE, GDAD, or (as in the video) ADAD.
I haven't played a mandolin for ages, as I prefer a bouzouki. So if I want a mandola or mandolin sound I just capo it at the 7th or 12th fret.
If want to hear me playing the bouzouki on my own music try this. My wife is playing (and wrote) the melody line on some recorders... http://www.soundclick.com/player/single_player.cfm?songid=6454720&q=hi&newref=1
