Hope you're not looking to play any high notes with that FZ-2 on, because they are going to sound AWFUL. But for low stuff, power chords, etc, the FZ-2 is killer.
Here's a song done by my friend that is heavy on the FZ-2:

DB - I second what Dr.Bob said about the boost mode on the FZ-2 - caught me out at a rehearsal and nearly took our bass players head off - he happened to be closest to my amp at the time - be careful - could be a speaker shredder or a bass player deafener!
Just thinking - what guitar and amp set up are you using? If you could let us know, I could try and replicate it and try out a few of my fuzzes with it for you. Happy to jot down a few mini-reviews.
Got the Britt Face plugged into a Line6 Guitar Port as we speak and an Explorer with high output pickups in my hands. I think I might have been a bit harsh with my previous post - right now it sounds the dogs b's with Fuzz on about 3 o'clock, Voice on the same and Level at about 4 o'clock. Winding the Voice back to 7 o'clock is sounding really dirty - just how I like it! Foxy Lady sounds pretty well as it should! |

I do have a Fulltone 69, a Fulltone SoulBender and an Ibanez 60's Fuzz (which is basically Ibanez' version of the BigMuff circuit wise)
out of those I like the Soulbender the most. I doesn't clean up as well as the 69 when turning down the guitars volume knob but sounds better with my current amp. |

| about the double muff though. Isn't it two cascading muff overdrives.... as opposed to the fuzz from a big muff... |

I'm generally using one of these...
80's USA Fender Strat, or this...
72 Custom Reissue Mexican Fender Tele, or this..
78 Fender Mustang, going into one of these...
Stock Epiphone Valve junior. Cheers for all the responses.
The_Doc - I read a few really good reviews about the Britt Face. The guy who designed it really sounds like he cares alot about the sound from what is written on his website. I also liked the fact that not many people have them, or have even heard of them, which made it slightly cooler still. It sounds like I may have to get one at some point, but I'll be giving my FZ-2 big licks when it arrives.
Kulten - In case you missed my post, I won an FZ-2 on eBay today. I am excited about her arrival!!! Thanks for all the reponses. Keep 'em comming. I almost feel like I should re-name the topic...'Lets Talk Fuzz'!!!! |

I was at a gig the other night and the guitar player was using a big muff and a tube screamer through a engl 1x12 combo and a sessionette 90 in stereo(looked like a old roland rack unit for chorus and delay/reverb)...his clean sounds were good but i was a bit dissapointed when he kicked in the muff..i was expecting a huge wall of fuzz to hit me but it sounded weak and didn't break up like a good fuzz should..... ..i didn't get a chance to speak to him but it looked brand new so i imagine it was one of the reissues.....i also have a FZ-3 that i used to use but it's not great either to be honest...i keep it because from what i can see in the production numbers they only made around 15,000 of the FZ-3 must be one of the lowest production numbers of a boss pedal, and i don't really sell gear on anymore as i usually find i'm missing it,or find a use for it later somewhere down the line......... |

Fuzzes are things you must listen to and try carefully, before buying. My opinion is that the simpler the better, two transistors are all that is needed to make a great fuzz. Mostly I like the Fuzz Face type of fuzz, but the possible variations with these around ten components are huge The really good fuzzes Ive tried have in most cases been hand build and expensive, there are (to my knowledge) no Bad Monkey-fuzzes. Big Muff is not a good fuzz in my opinion, its more a good distortion pedal. The Boss fuzzes are not that good, but I like FZ-2 a lot, FZ-5 is a disaster
My advice is to build a Fuzz Face clone by yourself, there are plenty of schematics on the net, if possible or let friend that can handle a soldering iron do it.

Z.vex Fuzz Factory. There is a cheaper version that goes under the moniker Vexter Fuzz Factory. I'm not sure of the difference. I think components are the same they just are bare silk screened enclosure rather than hand painted.

Earthbound Audio Supercollider is the Fuzz I use for bass....I freakin love it. It is bass on a Muff circuit and retains the low end really well. The mid knob is a welcome feature (at least for bass).

I'm also interested in the Chunk Systems Brown Dog for a gated fuzz.

The Supercollider is the cheapest out of all of them. |

All sorts of different fuzzes...
- silicon fuzzface (Pompeii/Meddle, DSOTM era Gilmour, Band Of Gypsies era Hendrix) - germanium fuzzface (early Experience era Hendrix) - MkI, MkII, MkIII tonebenders (Page MkII, Beck MkII, Ronson MkI) - psychedelic 60's nasty fuzz- Maestro (Satisfaction), Fuzzrite (Stooges), Kay, Mahoney Bossttone, etc. - Muffs (later Gilmour, Ernie Eisley, Corgan) - hybrid fuzzes, versatility (Fuzz Factory, Analogman Peppermint Fuzz, Demeter Fuzzulator, Tonefactor Huckleberry, etc)
These are all very different sounding, and its worth researching before pulling the trigger on any of them. Tube amp is necessary for most, fuzzes do not sound very nice w/ solid state amps. Check out some youtubes and you'll get a decent idea of the sounds they generate. As someone said above, steer clear of the Boss fuzzes- not very good IMO...

FZ-2 is my favourite boss fuzz, by a LOOOONG way!
However...
If you're in the UK and want something a bit different, get in touch with my mate E at www.e-fects.co.uk . He can build you something to order, based on your requirements for about 50.
I've got an E-fects Scrambl-E (Ampeg Scrambler clone) and he's also built a Bass-E (bass-specific) and fuzzes with boosters & bias controls for friends of mine. |
