Didn't think it was fair to hijack rschua's thread since he got his self-modded-Melanhead's ds-1 fixed. Went and did the ds-1 mod in the DYI world, peice for peice (still waiting on the silver mica caps)and I was throughly impressed with the results. More bottom end, didn't sound weak as stock, and you can really hear the sustain. Buzzzzzzzzzzzz Makes a great booster with no drive, and just as good boosted witha sd-1 after the ds-1 (S.S.D.D. combo?) When you crank the distortion knob past 7-8, you can almost hear the fuzz move up in stages. Might add a switch and move the led so its peeking out flashing. Anyone else like the Melanheads mod?
I almost had the same problem as rschua, I found a solderball stuck on the pcb from the manufacture, a good dropp or whack and that solderball would have been sent rolling around |

Hi ChristoMephisto I thnk I may have answered this in the other thread. Thanks for the link, I printed out a 50 plus pages of the thread, for Melanhead's DS-1 Mod. I find it easier to read, sometimes I'm not anywhere near a computer and my old PDA is cactus.
While waiting for the silver mica caps, you may want to substitute some poly green caps, or MKT's - AS 10 days can seem like forever.
I'm still waiting for a few parts, for the MXR Dyna Comp Clone that I'm working on... and we have a 4 day break for Easter.
Did you mod a MIT DS-1?
The demo clips from MelanHead sound very good, I think I have been convinced to do the Mod to at least one of my DS-1's. They Currently sell for about $78Au new, over here.
I didn't thinks much of some of the other clips, that were posted on pages further down the list - maybe around page 4 to 6.

Yep, i did it to a mit ds-1. I don't have any silver micas small enough in value, a 470pf and a 220pf teh parts are coming with the comps for a sg-1 clone, i need a dp3t stomp switch that can fit in a boss pedal. Purley for looks next project is the dd-3 hicut i kept putting off. Debating 'tween just a 0.047uf cap in the E level or adding a switch for both .047 and a .1, and if i place them on the frequecy pot also... time to put down the soldering gun and pick up my axe
thx again dr.bob ps your pda is a cactus? you post your notes on it? would a 30 foot cactus be a network server?

Hi ChristoMephisto The PDA was an original Apple Classic Newton It's just too old to use these days. The screen looks like I used it for a soldering iron wipe sponge, if you know what I mean.
I have been searching for a MODERN replacement PDA, it has to be able to load & use PDF's, I have all my Tech Notes for Pedals & work repair info, on a bunch of PDF's. And it has to have fantastic battery life, Wireless & maybe bluetooth connectivity, & oh yeah, has to be reasonably priced.
My number 3 son, has a nice HP-Compaq I think it's the 1950, but it has battery life.
I also (used) to load up all my emails & read-me's for the day into my old Newton. If your cringing, I had my Classic Newton for about 10 years, & it never missed a beat, I did do a battery upgrade mod to it, it used to run for about 4 days to a week.
Sorry if this is turning into a PDA Thread. Do you use a PDA?
I find laptops too cumbersome. I am currently carrying all my PDF's & data on three 1 Gig thumb drives.
Back to PEDALS HERE ======= Tell me how the DS-1 mod goes, maybe even post up some audio demo files.
After reading most of the 50 pages on the Melanhead DS-1 mod, there seems to be some confusion about a few different points, with this mod. I guess I'll just have to sit down with the schematic & PCB overlay in the service notes, and figure out what the disputed parts are. even the confusion about, to LED or not to LED, like in the SEM.
Did you go by the list on the page that you linked us to? I thinks it;s listed as page 1, but it's the oldest part of the thread.
Regards Dr. Bob
PS - Don't eat too may chocolate easter pedals.

Hi ChristoMephisto I just tried to send you a PM but all I got was a VB script error & time-out.
I was going to ask you if you had any mods for the Boss CS-2 Compressor Sustainer, as you may have read in previous threads, I hate mine with a .. passion.
Diggum12 suggested a few mods, that he was working on, but I lost 2700 emails, and the info he sent me is now lost--- maybe, I'm still trying to recover that hard disk.
I recently repaired a Crane Tortoise GC-1 optic compressor, it is so transperent, that I started to wonder if I had actually repaired it. while it's a studio quality compressor pedal, it seems to no have any setting, that I have found so far, that will sustain.
In all honesty, I have been searching for a CS-2, & I am currently building a dyna Comp Clone. Sorry to steal your DS-1 thread again, pls send me a PM, so I can avoid thread rustling.
Regards Dr. Bob |

Hi dr.bob, i got the same thing eariler today, you were logged out. vb script and im stuck behind a firewall at work, at 2am EST, your about 10 hours ahead of me, in tomorrow land seems im gonna have to read up on the melanhead mod, i just skimmed through it the first time. One thing i did notice is he left the resistor at R14 stock 2.2k, in most other mods it's lowered to 1.5k. Some other ds-1 mod i found notes switching to a 1k resistor for more bass, and 2.2k for metal...interesting There was also a few the left the same value, but changed to metal film caps. Probably swap out the r14, then r13 if if feel its still too much distortion or the d4 in series with another led.

Hi dingus Do you still use the Newton? We might have to move this PDA discussion to the Off Topic, or into PM I also have a 2000, but it's just too cumbersome, these days.

Hi nebo_81 & Guys
Thank you for your PM requesting info. on the Melanhead Mod.
I thought I would reply here in the forum, so the other members would also benefit from the information.
Plus it only took me about 2 hours to locate it...
Here is the link to the Melanhead's DS-1 MOD. http://www.diystompboxes.com/smfforum/index.php?topic=32443.0
All 50 or so pages of it.
And a kind thank you to Aron Neson's www.diystompboxes.com --- forum pages.
Hope this helps? There are at least three mp3 samples on this link as well.
And let all know how you go with the mod.
It's been a long time since you posted nebo_81, or have you been in the background reading the posts?
Regards Dr. Bob |
