This is unfortunately what happens whenever something becomes "collectible". What you're going to see happen now are people separating the more rare/desirable pedals from their boxes and auctioning them all separately, because collectors simply won't say no. Or the prices for the ones still with boxes will inflate that much further.
There's a lot of mystique out there surrounding analog delay versus digital -- from what I read in my travels in musician's forums, a lot of it seems to be driven primarily by David Gilmour tone fanatics, which is ironic when you consider that he's using a Pete Cornish modified DD-2 now.
