I've been playing rock music since i started playing. So really all i needed was a o/d pedal and to simply get better as a player.
I've finally gone out and grabbed myself a wah pedal (Dunlop crybaby).
Afer an hour, I gave up. unplugged it and threw my hands in the air. No matter what I do all I get is bad '70s porn music.
I'm looking to get that really sublte wah effect like in the solo from Sweet Child'o'Mine by Guns n Roses.
All I get is the Theme music to "Starsky and Hutch"
Please help before the crybaby gets the
Thanks Jared |

Why not try Boss PW-10, its a lot of wahs in one package (and a lot of distorsions). I like it, the uni-vibe-mode is great and nearly worth the price of the unit by itself. |

Why don't you give Vox 848 a try?
It's an old school wah, with only one sound, but trust me, it's real McCoy!
Oh, yeah, I love it SO much... |

I like 70's porn music That's proabbly why I cherish my crybaby so much.
AFAIK Slash is using a crybaby so you should be able to get the same effect as on Sweet Child. The Morley Bad Horsey has a more modern sound than the the crybaby. The PW-10 is also a good idea as it's more versatile.

| The only wah I have is the first issue of the Bass Cry Baby. I have hardly ever used it, although one of the guitarists from one of my old bands used it on a guitar solo and it sounded great. If I were to buy one for my own pedalboard, I'd probably go with a Cry Baby or a Vox. It's just that I don't have much use for one right now and I also had a hard time getting the hang of the bass version, so I never gave it any more thought. |

| Okay, I re-read the original post and saw the Slash thing. That's definitely a Cry Baby, as bossarea pointed out. It could be a matter of finding the right model, as there are a few versions available. I'm not sure, but I'm guessing that the one on "Sweet Child..." is a vintage model and it probably uses a "Fasel inductor" which is the tone connosieur's choice apparetnly, when it comes to wah pedals. |

Ya gotta hand it to 70's porn for wah tones. But i can understand the frustration with trying one and that's all you end up sounding like. I have the same problem. I'm going to try a Boss PW-10, if i still sound like a 70's porn star/guitarist I'm giving up on wah's all together. It's true that slash uses a crybaby, but he uses a rackmount version, and has three controlers placed at different spots onstage. |

| Danelectro made one that looked like a 50s car. I don't know if they still make them. 3-4 years ago the shops were almost throwing them at you. People just didn't want them because they looked so silly. A friend of mine bought one and I was suprised to discover that it sounded very good. Might be a choice if you're on a budget. |

i got a snarling dogs black bawl wah and it's pretty cool, it has a pre-amp volume controller as well.. snarling dogs has a lot of cool wah pedals around, just download their samples from the net and see whether you like it or not, personally i don't like the danelectro ones because they're made of plastic!! very unreliable.. the snarling dogs wah, it weighs twice as heavy as a crybaby and i finally found the wah that expressed my favorite wah sound through snarling dogs black bawl wah. btw, i play 60's, 70's, 80's rock and sometimes ska and blues, so.. this wah personally defines my sound, give it a try anyways, you might like it, there are blues wah, moldspore wah, and heaps of other wah.. i saw that danelectro pedal and i thought that it's sooo cool, but after i touched it, i was bloody disappointed, it's made of plastic and it's very light. with a snarling dogs wah weight and built, you can kill a person with that wah.. |

| You might also want to look into whether or not Slash's wah has Dunlop's "Q" control on it, that changes the pronouncement of the wah effect. The 535Q has an additional control that changes the range of the wah effect. |

I've been told that the Vox V847 is less intense and smoother than other wahs. Don't exactly know what that means. May be it is more like the Jimi Hendrix except for the fact that the Vox looks way cooler than all of them (all of the wahs mentioned here by the way are made by Dunlop). But they have been using different inductors all of the time in the Vox V847s, so one from on year may sound really different than one from another year. |

| On the topic of slash's rackmount wahs. They are fully adjustable (where the wah starts, where it ends, Q control, boost, all that good shnit) but i think he has it set up as a fairly ordinary wah. I do know that on GnR's Appatite for destruction he used a regular old dunlop crybaby. No Q control, boost, or slector switches. |

| Definately check out the 535Q. I have one (with fasel inductor), and havn't found a better sounding wah. It's also VERY adjustable. (I really tried to like the boss wah, but just couldn't warm up to it) The other thing about playing with a wah is not everyone will use the same sweep and speed with their feet. My buddy and I both use the same wahs with nearly the same settings, and it sounds completely different. |

I've got a Thomas Organ Cry Baby with the TDK inductor; it's probably a '70s model. It's quite bright sounding and responsive, but I've got a ways to go as far as developing the touch for using it correctly.
Small Bear Electronics (http://www.smallbearelec.com) has the parts for winding your own "original" style inductor, and a link to the instructions how... at http://www.geofex.com there's an article about wah pedals under "FX Technology".

| the only wah pedal you ever need is the Dunlop Crybaby from Hell.. its the one that Dimebag Darrel (RIP) used to endorse. i know the name makes it sound like it will rip your face off, but you can get some real nice subtle wah sounds. it can go from soothing clean to crazy metal wah to the Shaft theme and anywhere in between. |
