I recently saw someone using PS-3 with expression pedal. He was bragging about how you get 2 for 1: pitch shift + delay.

I never tried PS-3, but wondered if tones are compromised. Seems like PS-3 = DD-3 + limited version of PS-5.

Any thoughts?

The PS-3 is one of my favourite pedals. Probably because it was my first Boss.

It is versatile and great fun to play with, but it does sound very "digital". I'm not sure if it really gives you such a good guitar tone. I originally bought mine for use with a drum machine, a purpose which it served well.

One of the cool things it will let you do is effect the feedback loop of the delay with pitch shifting so that your echoes ascend or decend in pitch. The addition of an expression pedal, as you mentioned, gives you a fair amount of control.

I don't use mine with guitar nowadays. I just have mine for sentimental reasons. I use an Eventide PitchFactor which completely outclasses the PS-3. Unfortunately the PitchFactor is also horribly expensive.

To sum up: Yes, the PS-3 is pretty cool, loads of fun and packed with features for its size, but don't expect it to sound fantastic. It's definitely not for a tone junkie, but if you like messing around with fun effects, it's for you.
