I came across this one before, and thought it was fake.
I think he put on the serial himself and added a SS.
The guts are still MIT either way, so I dont see how that much of an overlap (from SS days to the move to taiwan) could be in 1 pedal. |

That is one wacky DS-1.
* 6 digit ink stamped serial number. It's odd but not unique. Here's an OD-1 that popped up earlier.

* Long dash and silver screw This normally indicates serial 0500 or less and a production date before mid 1981. This one appears to be later though.
* Roland Japan label This is the type 3 label with the sticker removed. These are normally seen on pedals with serial around 16xx00 and they were only used for a very short time (maybe 2 months).
* Made in Taiwan PCB This would indicate around 1986-1987. It's also an ET-21F board. My 071700 (black screw) has an ET-21E board. My 339600 has the F board but it doesn't say Taiwan on it.
* Black battery clip This usually means it's a Taiwan pedal but in this case, who knows.
The soldering looks original so I don't see any reason to believe that it's put together from parts. I think this emoticon sums it up:

wow. that is defintately a mutt. but guaranteed there is foul play somewhere. most likely, the original owner took out the guts and put in MIT ones.
the reason i think this is because clearly the casing is early MIJ due to the long dash, D under T thing. BUT, the Silver Screw and Use a Coin say nothing because they can easily be swapped. the guts say MIT and the battery snap is BLACK. im 99 percent sure that all SS snaps are grey or even blue. i cant make out if the knobs are screw on or pull offs, but the 1/4 jacks seem to be thin also indicating early MIJ. like i said i bet you its all legit EXCEPT for the guts (which is the one thing you would WANT to be MIJ)
also this isnt really legit by any means, but you can just tell by the paint and appearance of the rubber foot pad that the casing is old.
my personal opinion is that its not even originally Silver Screw, but one of the first black screwed MIJ DS-1s, but overall, it definately doesnt all add up |
