does playing in bands with other people who had previously played with famous musicians count? if so, then I have one degree of playing separation from an ex-Sex Pistol and a member of R.E.M.
if that's not lame enough, what about eBay transactions with famous musicians? I once bought from Mike Hampton, the harDCore/Dischord guitarist.... |

Do not be sorry, you are very right, Greg is great!!, I just feel he does not really have something uniquely of his own. I know this is very hard, and he does have great stuff, can play well, but listening to him is like: Yep I heard that somewhere else. Not a problem, I feel that is probably what he has been working on his whole life: Just wanted to understand what other people do, and how they do it. Doing this will take an awful lot of time, in a way I am like that myself too, but then I also work on just trying to explore avenues which are not so well-known.
I did speak to Greg in person, and yes, he is very nice and patient, and really a great overal guy. You can hear it from his playing too. I mean music is so honest, there are a lot of players, and when you listen you can hear what kind of person they are through the notes they play. Music just does not lie, but then you can cover things up as well, which will hide your identity, and I know, Greg does not do that as he is a very honest guy.
During the clinic where I met him, he mentioned Mark Knopfler a lot, talked about his admiration for him, his sound and his playing. Think of Knoplfer and his style, not entireley unique, but a band like Dire Straight in 1978? No there was noone who did that kind of stuff in bandcontext. Yes there is J.J. Cale [was so surprised when I heard this guy a little later after my Knopler discovery, to find out that he does sound so similar to Mark, but then you have to say that Cale was there earlier, but Cale did not put it into a bandcontext like what Mark did.] Feel that Knopfler does have his own style, and he also comes up with the same stuff every time, still I love his his sound and his ideas. he also seem to be an honest guy as well, listen to his phrases, lyrics and his sound, it is all there really.
Hear, hear, visserman! (Or should that be "here, here") I hear what you're saying and would have to agree 100%. Never really thought about it like that. Thanks for sharing!
On the Mark Knopfler thing (slightly going off topic here, I think) and how he seems to be such a nice guy...
On their "Bothers in Arms" tour (they came to Tasmania, Australia - where I live) in 1986. Played at an arena (a local Aussie Rules football stadium) with over 10,000 people. This was huge for Tassie back then as there were probably less than 250,000 people living in the state at the time.
Anyway, AFTER the concert, they arrived at one of the local night clubs where a local covers band was playing. As it happened the covers band was playing a couple of Dire Straits tunes - afterall, Dire Straits were probably the biggest band on earth at the time! But Mark Knopfler himself got up and started jamming with the local band!!!! It was an amazing oportunity for both the band and anyone in the club at the time. Mark was fantastic and an incredibly genuine and nice guy at the same time.
I also saw him on his last tour to Australia - at an arena in Melbourne, Victoria. He was very sick with a flu-type virus. But it didn't stop him giving 110%. The crowd loved him. He joked with them, allowed the crowd to heckle him! For example... he was sitting down for a few songs and asked if he could have a nice hot lemon drink or some chicken soup to help his throat... someone yelled out from the crowd, "Where's you blanket, old man!?" presumably to put over his lap. He thought that was hilarious and made some similar funny quick-witted comment straight back - needless to say the crowd LOVED IT!)
A real nice genuine guy from my experiences.
I've not listened to much Cale but will go check him out now. |
