Can I ask you please to do something that won't cost you a fortune.
Download 'Killing in the Name of' by Rage Against the Machine before Sunday from your favourite legal download site. There's a group started on FaceBook to try to get this to number one for Christmas, and beat that X-Factor guff. Just think how good it would be...
Tell all your friends!

I must add how delighted I would be if we could make this happen. Apparently it's had over 100000 downloads so far this week!

Here's the facebook group....
FaceBook RatM for Xmas Number 1

Amazon are selling it for 29p. Don't download it 10 times or anything, as it will be omitted from the charts!

A whole lot of controversy over all this. TBH I think the xfactor is just a real expensive way of finding mediocre singers, but I also think the guy who won it is entitled to a legit number one single. I don't mind the Xfactor, entertaining when you get into it but I don't like the way ITV, Simon Cowell ect get stinking rich out of this.

I decided to sit out of this, look forward to seeing how this pans out

Oh, Facebook name DasBeef?

Hey Ollie. I am going to warn you that this is a rant. I know you're only young and it is not directed at you, it's directed at x-factor. You actually hit the nail on the head with your last post, but then ruined it. Just a shame you've probably had this shit on telly for as long as you can remember. So here's the rant...

X-factor is glorified karaoke. It's just mediocrity at it's socially acceptable peak. If I want to be a plumber, I don't go on a TV show and win the best plumber out of a bunch of no-hopers award, do I? I serve my apprenticeship and learn my craft to become the best plumber I can be. What this crop of a-holes should do. If you want to be a performer, be famous, or whatever like these sell out, fame hungry, suckers of Satan's... (I'll stop there, but any Bill Hicks fans should be able to finish that).. want to be, then put in the hard graft. Play the sweaty clubs. Learn how to win an audience. I think this is why the shelf life of the artists found on these shows are often shorter than my patience for Cheryl Cole is getting. There's nothing invested in it except fat cash. Is there any artist ever found on these shows, that any self respecting music critic would buy? I actually put that out to the forum. We have a diverse musical taste as forum members, but I would almost bet my mortgage that no-one on here owns a single CD by any of the artists found on these type of shows. If your wife/missus/partner does, it doesn't count. Allowing children to be brought up with this, and enjoy this as an acceptable form of 'art' actually pains me. It's an entertainment show, not an actual show that finds a respectable artist. Teaching the youngsters of the world that mediocrity is alright. Not putting in the work is alright. Expecting it to be handed to you is alright, is largely what I find wrong with the country that I lave in today. Look at the 'artists' they get on the show to perform. Robbie Williams, Bon Jovi, Michael Buble, Rihana, Paul 'I used to be a Beatle but I haven't written a decent song for a very long time' MacCarteny..etc. About the only artists I was surprised to see on there was George Michael. I thought he might have known better, but perhaps he's reverting back to his wham days. I don't mind that Joe lad, I really don't. I have watched x-factor most weeks, as my girlfriend loves it. I actually think he's a nice guy. Does he deserve a number 1? No. With a Miley Cyrus song? A cover of a Miley Cyrus song? WTF!!!!!! No he does not. I do wish him all the best and that, but just plain no. For me, if Jimi Hendrix never found fame, I reckon you'd still find him playing guitar and singing songs in some dirty club. If SRV never found fame, I think you'd still find hime playing guitar and singing songs in some dirty club. If Joe Strummer never found fame, I'm sure you'd find him singing songs, and playing guitar and singing songs in some dirty club. If Joe McCeldry (I know I messed the spelling) never found fame, I'm sure he'd work in a bank, or building society, or laywers firm or whatever. My point is, the others I mentioned, for me cared and loved their craft. The were true artists as they not only enjoyed music, but contributed to it. I actually can't think of a performer from any of these type of shows that has contributed. Darius - Colourblind? Chico - It's Chico Time? Susan Boyle with her album full of covers. Well, you can poke the lot. I find that the whole x-factor type thing is raping an art form that I love, enjoy and find beautiful. Let's get back to artists who care for there craft. Who eat, breathe and sleep what they do. Who contribute, not because they want a fat cheque, fame, fortune... But because it's the only thing they know how to do.

Wow.......now that is a rant......i have to agree with a lot you said DasBeef and i'm sorry Ollie but just because someone wins a competition in doesn't automatically entitle them to a No-1 song in the charts....i suppose the 100,000 hit the RATM song has got shows a lot of people agree with the sentiment...

personally i agree with Sting on the judges, dani minogue and cheryl cole and products of an earlier go at maufactured pop music by people like Cowell and Louis Walsh and what do the four of them know about music....f**k all....Walsh churns out the same crap here in Ireland with Westlife and Boyzone, all they know about is marketing, but this isn't a new phenomenon in music and has been going on since the 50's...people like the Beatles and the Stones etc.. broke that stranglehold by writing a performing their own songs,in Ireland we have a very strong folk and trad music tradition so it's a bit harder for us to get swamped,as most people are exposed at an early age to real music and musicians plus Rory Gallagher and Phil Lynott led the way here from the crap and mediocracy of the showbands but it seems some people are happy to go back down the easy route and go straight back into that type of situation rather than the hard work involved...i know the Xfactor is a show and entertainment(my kids love it) but i can see where DasBeef is coming from..it's the slippery slope back to a time where artists were not free to write their own material and everything had to be 3 minutes long to get played on the radio....i think the bit where they brought out people like Bon Jovi,George Michael, paul MaCartney etc...people i consider to be real musicians and artists in some sort of attempt to justify the show was where they stepped over the line..by saying this is where you can end up... that fine but all those artists write their own material and profit from the royalities...what will Joe WHATSISNAME get ..... a big bill that he won't ever be able to pay....none of that shit comes for free, the limos, clothes, recording time etc...personally i think Shame on them for appearing, they have sold out as far as i'm concerned even though every one of them has made more money than they will ever spend in their lifetime from music and don't need the exposure, they put their greed for more album sales for christmas in front of an artform that has clothed and fed and paid their bills for many years..it's a sad day for Rock N Roll and i've lost a lot of respect for George Michael and Robbie Williams, two people who had tried very hard to get away from that enviroment, whats even more scary is the fact Cowell has gotten so much clout in the music business to get people like Bon Jovi and MaCartney on in the first place and fair play to Sting for sticking to his guns and telling them to stick it up their ass...i'll keep watching Jools Holland...

Awesome DasBeef, I love a good rant. Especially when I agree (such is the case here). Oh, and Franzoni - Excellent addendum to rant.

I lived in the UK from 2003-5 and during that time I developed a severe distaste for that kind of pop-star fabrication (it offends all five of my senses)... I kept telling myself: "at least it's not like that back in Australia...". Then to my horror, when I arrived home... it had spread. We have the same crap here... and it is just that: The same crap.

Fortunately here in Aus we have an excellent national government funded (but not controlled) radio station called "Triple J"... Their mandate is to proactively play new music (especially Australian, but also stuff from other countries) by artists that don't usually get played on the commercial stations... They have helped launch many *real* bands from obscurity (one example is Silverchair - I'm not a fan but they did get their start on Triple J when the other stations wouldn't play them). Effectively they offer an alternative to the record-company-pocket-lining, unit-shifting, shrink-wrapped, mass-produced pop/rock drivel that abounds elsewhere.

Independent music is alive and well in Australia, unfortunately so is Pop Idol.

aha fair enough guys, I'm feel like im on both sides with this one, I don't think they automatically get a number one, I just think buying an old song into the charts like this is kind of cheating. If another band released a NEW song in the run up to Christmas then fair play to them they should get it over the xfactor.

I would imagine that the RATM song was picked because of the bands anti-corp/anti neo-con stance in the past...Tom Morello used to have the quote "arm the homeless" on his guitar in large letters...

The main problem - in my opinion - is that some people try to make too much money out of it. There is nothing wrong with playing music for living, but some 'managers' found out that it's possible to gain exuberant amounts of $$ with a band playing 'pre-fab' music.

On the other hand, if someone wants to pay for this kind of 'music', he's free to do what he wants. There is no 'authority' regarding music, anyone can say: I like this, but I don't like that. Luckily, everyone is free to listen to what he prefers, but it's just sad that some of the artists I like, don't get what they deserve (both $$ & fame) in my opinion.

Rant all you like folks.

There are plenty of...
People still watching the show.
People still buying the single.
People still waiting to buy the album.
People waiting to get tickets for a live tour.

Simon Cowell is a genius at marketing a product to a mass audience.

I'm not one of the people I listed above, I hate the show... just my humble opinion.

LOL

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/entertainment/8413557.stm

Its winning!!

"just because someone wins a competition in doesn't automatically entitle them to a No-1 song in the charts"

Absolutely, I totally agree with Franzoni on that-

Its almost like everyone now expects that every Christmas the X-factor winner will automatically go to number one-

I hate all of it- The TV stations are filled with reality shows and the charts are all polluted with the 'fruits' of these shows- Real cheap and uninspiring stuff in my opinion- of course if you ram it down everyones throats all day long of course people will buy it and that just fuels the fire- and every year it will be the same thing-

Actually much earlier this year I just decided I had enough and I stopped watching TV and I only now listen to internet radio- it was last years double whammy of Alexandra Burke and Leona Lewis singles that just totally killed radio for me and I couldn't take listening to it anymore.......

I love loads of different types of music, I love pop music too and I'm not afraid to admit it- 99% of stuff produced by these reality shows is NOT pop music though its just karaoke and thats it-

The charts at the moment in the UK always seem to be full of karaoke and if RATM gets to number one it will at least dilute the mix.... who knows I might even start listening to Radio 1 again......

Wow! I'm actully impressed how well Facebook works for getting people together to do something.

I heard that the CD (how old fashioned) is out tomorrow? That should start to heat up the competition. I've read on other forums that a lot of people arn't keen on buying a song they brought years ago I saw when the facebook group first emerged, and can't believe how quickly it's grown

No.....your quite right Paul,my kids love it and and were gutted when jedward went out..but then they are 8,4 and 2 years old........the word here at the moment is Jedward are getting nearly 8 Grand for an appearance and being irish are all over the place at the moment...nice work if you can get it..sometimes i think the runners up do better than the winners.....personally i hate Leona Lewis singing,i think her range is limited to either the low or high registers with nothing in between..a bit like Maria Carey, they don't move me as singers or interpeters of songs...and i think Cowells greed inkeeping Jedward in it after it was clear they were the worst singers in the competition will eventually be his downfall..he made it very clear it was all about viewing figures and money...

on a more positive note i had Steely Dan's 'aja' on the kitchen stereo while making the dinner and my 4 year old was dancing around to 'josie'....might be hope yet...........
