Does anyone have any good links or advice about changing a nut on a guitar? I think I need to change one on a guitar cause its got a crack problem, or a slight crack in it I should say and I have found a slotted one that I think will line up and fit just fine based on the specs sheet of the replacement and my mesurements of the current one. I have also looked at some different online resources already like stewmac, Graphtech/Tusq's nut installl directions, and fretnot, so I think this is a simple tap out gently and put the new one in with a dab of glue kind of deal, but I like to check as many sets of directions on these sorts of things as I can to sort of cross reference and verify the procedure, plus some have different hints on the procedure.
Also, if anyone knows what type of file and the size (and/or gauge?) that would be good to get any glue residue out of the nut slot, that would be helpful too. I guess I could just carefully scrape with an X-acto knife, but thought maybe a file might make it a bit easier as long as I don't mess up the slot.
Thanks! |

my tele fell over a while back and a chunk of the nut fell off where the high E string sits ..i just superglued it back together and filed out the excess glue with some tip cleaners i use for when i'm oxy acetylene welding....handy for nut slots as the set comes in various sizes and are only a couple of euro...any good welding supplies will have them....... |

Hi Franzoni
(No pun intended) What a great Tech Tip, & bit of "outside of the square" thinking.
This is one really good reason I'm really glad to be a part of this forum & little community.
I once use a couple of old, but clean wound guitar strings as a simple nut file, I guess Oxy tip cleaners are a better idea. My retired father is a Boilermaker-Welder. I'll go & check out his stock.
Franzoni, please shout yourself a Beer or two on me.
Regards Dr. Bob |
