Hey all......ive just joined the fold of fellow boss pedal nutters!! Got a question about the PW-10 V-Wah. Ive got it in my effects loop with other pedals(PW-10,EQ-20,DD-6,HF-2,HR-2,TU-12H...all in a BCB-60 pedal board) running through a Crate Excalibur head with a Blue Voodoo 4X12 quad box. Now when I turn on the V-Wah the volume drops....ive tried it not in the effects loop, ive given it a clean, battery power and im at a loss. Im running extremely high gain coz thats the music I play(progressive thrash) and love my tone...really happy with it. What is causing this drop in volume???? The balance is turned all the way down and the wah range is basically set in the middle. I got the pedal from a mate who just didnt use it......are the input/output jacks dirty perhaps?? Any help would be appreciated Cheers |

Cheers Dr Bob....i'll have a nice cold Vic Bitter to celebrate my arrival to the fold for everyone at bossarea. Where abouts are you from Dr Bob...im down in Melbourne. Just looking in the manual of the pw-10......call me a dumbarse but, it says i shouldnt be using a connecting cable that contains a resistor. Now im using planet wave cables for my effects loop and my guitar straight into the head.....could this have any negative effects because i dont have any spare cables lying around i could try. Obviously this is a common problem if its in the troubleshooting section of the manual......someone please help..its giving me the screaming sh1ts. |

Hi Alien DNA If you just run the wah on its own, do you still get the volume drop.?
Maybe you can try to figure out the problem, but eliminating fist of all, everything but the wah, then, try adding one pedal of at a time, back to your setup.
This will at least give you some idea, where the problem might be.
I'm also in the Melbourne area, but near to. Berwick, Fountain Gate: and if your a Muso, you'll know the Hallam Pub, on the Princess Hwy.
What part of Melb. are you in.
Regards & good luck Dr. Bob

Bob...yeah im just running the wah without the added built in distortion because of the high gain im using and tried it on its own and still got the volume drop so i know its not the otherf pedals...the only other thing i can think of is my power supply...maybe she aint getting enough juice because of all the other pedals?????? Bewrick is on the other side of melb to me...im in sunbury.....i assume your in a band playing at Hallam pub....what is the name of the band?? Im in a band called Unknown Addiction....check us out at www.unknownaddiction.com if ya get the chance...hope you enjoy it.
Thanks for the help doc...cheers......never know might get the chance to have a jam and bounce off a couple ideas of each other...just coz i play prog thrash, dont mean im not into other genres. Hows this arse kickin weather??? Great excuse to drink U da man Doc...cheers |

First off, try the wah in front of the amp. Granted, if you like wah after distortion (which I personally think sounds like crap ) you'd have to place it in the loop. If so, try sticking another pedal (buffered/Boss-type) in front of the wah. Some pedals/circuits work better than others in the loop, and having one that works in front of the one that doesn't can help.
But you should really try the wah in front of the amp - there are no rules here, but that's where most people would say it belongs.

Hi Alien DNA
This might sound like a dumbass answer, but have you tried out, a NEW PW-10 V-Wah, in one or your local music stores, to see, if a brand new one, suffers from the same problem.
Hey... nice Web Site, I was very impressed, who did the work for you?
I also read the "whole" article on the watering down & mis-use of the Metal Hand Sign' Abuse --- "Sign of the Goat"
Man I laughed sooo hard I nearly stopped breathing.
Let it be known, I have never used the sign, when the dryer at the laundromat finished. Or when the micro wave finished heating my baked beans...
For those that don't know what I am talking about, go to Alien DNA's web page. read the article on: Metal Hand Sign' Abuse http://www.unknownaddiction.com/onion.htm

Hey stinkfoot...cheers for the help. The whole pedal board is running through the effects loop with the wah pedal being the first pedal recieving the signal, then the eq-20,dd-6,hf-2 then a hr-2. I agree a wah after distortion sound sh1t. Are you saying to with having the wah in front of the amp that it shouldnt be in the effects loop(guitar - wah - amp?) taking the wah put of the loop? I'll give that a try too. Big cheers to ya stinkfoot :) |

Hey Doc...i guess that'll be my next option to see if a new pedal suffers the same problem. Cheers on the compliments on the website...but all the praise has to go to my talented and beautiful wife who took the time to do it when she couldve been doing something else like playing with our sweet 2n 1/2 yr old daughter....its soon to be updated so keep your eyes peeled for that...after seems like a lifetime we have finally found ourselves a new drummer so we got a photoshoot this weekend and soon enough after that a few more things will go on the site too. If you think the metal hand sign was funny wait till you see the other links we're gona put on there....jesus i did stop breathing and thank god(i aint religious) the toilet was in the next room Keep y'all upto date with my findings on what the pw-10 problem is Thanks again Doc...be cool |

Update time: After rehearsals on sat nite, i changed the effects loop leads to shorter planet wave cables(half the length) and it seems like this has fixed the problem. Dont know the exactly the technical side of it, but there is less humming(not that i had alot, barely noticable really) and the signal seems brighter...maybe worn or dud cables in the first place.
Id like to thank all who took the time to think about my problem and give me some clues about how to fix.....i tried all your ideas. Much appreciated and i owe u all a beer at my next gig. 'Wah wah'ing all the way to the bank with a smile on my face ..and i was really close to getting it serviced/checked out. You guys rock |

Hi Alien DNA It's good to hear, that you may have rectified the problem with your setup & the PW-10 V-Wah
I have been looking a the getting a PW-10 V-Wah for a while now. I heard a young guitarist [lay one in Allans Ballarat for a while, it sounded ok, though he was running it into a Boss MicroCube15W amp.
I know that this probably isn't the right form to ask but; What are your comments on the PW-10 V-Wah Have you be able to compare it to the Ibanez Weeping Demon Wah.
I'm using a borrowed, Morley wah, I find it a bit too cutting on the treble side.
Get your Tech friend to measure the resistance of the cables you just replaced. When you shorten any coaxial type guitar lead, you lower the effective capacitance & resistance of the setup, By doing so, you also tend to increase the high frequencies that can pass down the lead/s
Running (High to low impedance) buffer/s on your setup, reduces the parasitic effects, that long & sometimes cheap cable have on your high freq. response.
Hi quality guitar leads, usually have low internal capacitance per metre/foot.
Also making sure that the first pedal, that you plug into has a high impedance input, is very important. anything over 470K to 500K is ok, but 1Meg and more, input impedance is even better.
In some cases, going above a 1Meg input impedance, can then start to cause other problems, like increasing the electrical noise of the setup.
What basically happens, is you effectively recreate the tone control pot on your guitar, and shunt some of the high frequencies down to ground., as if you were turning down the tone control. But you don't have any control over it.
Does your brain hurt yet? Sorry for the engineering school lecture, on impedance - capacitance & high to low Impedance buffers.

Hey Dr Bob!! I cant say ive tried the ibanez wah so im not in any position to compare....but the demon sure looks the shit. The pw-10 is a versatile unit, its nice to have so many options and to be a ble to use them is even better. Memory presets can be easily obtained with a click of the heel swith which scrolls through 3 of them. Eg: 1st could be morley wah, 2nd could be uni-vibe and the 3rd could be voice, then you could have your toe switch on cry baby mode. Im a big fan of having a plethora of options at my feet, and i think this has almost more choices than you could need. The COSM modeling isnt that bad either(for my needs anyway).Ive heard a few people say it doesnt work or feel right to them, but thats with any gear really, individual tastes. If anything, if it had a few more dials to fine tune the tone it would be the best wah on the planet(but im boss biased)...it even can be recalibrated if the unit doesnt sound right...although its set at the factory....all in all.....I think shes a beaut unit
Thanks for the engineering lecture...really interesting. Im a bit anal bout my cables....i dont use cheap crap....planet waves have been part of my tone now for quite a while and they just make me sound brighter...i personally recommend them. I was relieved when i cranked the wah with even volume and sweeter sound after a simple cable change....gonna call you the guru from now on Much appreciated Dr Bob |
