Thinking of getting an analouge CE5 to help round out my collection. Does anyone know roughly the s/n range before it went digital? The description for the s/n on the home page is the same as the CH1 |

Couldn't find anything totally definitive about this myself. Had to take the back off a few digital pigs until I found my analogue gem. Actually, that's not true. The digital CE-5's are OK.
It's worth getting an analogue one though... |

I think the pink label CE-5s are analogue. I don't think that has come to a hundred percent conclusion yet, but it is a bit easier than nailing it down by serial number.
When was the switch to digital again, 94, 95, 96? |

I've owned both the analogue AND digital versions of the CE5 at the same time.
In a blind test I doubt very much if you'd know which was which. Part of the problem is people tell you analogue must be better, so therfore you think you can hear differences!!
I sold my analogue one. Why?... because they fetch more money than digital ones on eBay (no other reason). |

The change took place at serial number KP1xxxx where P1 denotes October 2001. Get one with a second letter earlier in hte alphabet than P and it should be an analog CE-5. All blue and pink label CE-5s are analog. The change took place after the pedal had been given the dark gray label.
The CE-5 and CH-1 changed at the same time and that's why the description is the same for both of them. |

Interesting... I have both, and they are distinct sounds. THe analogue one is "warmer" (a few more distortion harmonics?), and the digital one is more "lush" (a few more frequency components?). It is not a huge difference, but it is real to my ear.

You guys may stone me but...
I just bought a pink label 1995 CE-5 a few weeks ago, and it has supplanted an old MIJ CE-2 in my pedalboard. It still has the warmth of the CE-2 but it gives me a little more clarity that the CE-2 doesn't give.
Don't get me wrong, I love 'em both. But for gigs I'm taking the CE-5.

And here's a quick shot of the insides for you tech-heads that know more about this stuff than I do...

Some people prefer the clarity of the CE-5.... whatever works for you bro'............personally i love my jap CE-2 but i also have a CH-1 at the end of my board mostly for splitting to both my amps but sometimes i use the two together and get a huge chorus sound..... |

Thanks for all the replies and info. The KP1xxx helped too, the K was omitted from the descriptions, so had me a tad confused (its easy)
silvertone, was your CE5 repaired or modded? I see two red caps in the mix. |

| I've A/B'd a few pairs of analogue/digital CE-5s and definitely heard a difference - the other people around did too and all selected the analogue version. |

I'm afraid I couldn't tell ya one way or the other. I just won it on ebay a few weeks back, and I'm one of those guys who can look at the insides of a pedal and it all looks like a spaghetti farm to me!
Sorry...maybe someone else that has a CE-5 from that period will chime in. |
