Summary of this thread
Dr.Bob and I found there are three versions of the MT-2 (that we know of so far):
V1: All chips M5218AL
V2: IC1,2,4 M5218AL and IC3 NJM4558L, text colour with "more blue"
V3: IC1,2,4 NJM14558L and IC3 NJM4558L, text colour with "more blue"
ORIGINAL THREAD FOLLOWS:
I found an MT-2 with NJM14558L chips for IC1,2,4 and NJM4558 for IC3. Serial TW23110 (Sep 2007).
THis is a second version of the MT-2... All M5218AL chips, and all 4558 chips.

The other difference is the printing colour. not sure if you will see it on your screen... Representative RGB values of the orange text colour are:
4558 chip version Red 255 Green 136 Blue 52
5218 chip version Red 255 Green 154 Blue 13

Hi Laurie & Guys
If you check - you might find that IC3 is actually a 4558 & the rest are 14558's
Mine has a combination as follows IC3 - NJM4558 IC-1-2-4 M5218's.
Also please read my PM reading this topic.
Regards Dr. Bob |

Hi Laurie.
It never ceases to amaze me, that we are still finding all these variations, & other info on the range of Boss pedals.
Perhaps we need to get a real life? - or in my case way more sleep.
I will try to get some "daylight" pics of the two that I have here - with the colour variations in the text.
Regards Dr. Bob |

Sound nuances are hard to tell. Neither Dr.bob nor I have all the three versions to do a side-by-side comparison.
I have the V1 andd V3, but the V1 is modded, so can't do a compare.
Dr.Bob has a V1 and a V2 that he might be able to do a compare on?

Hi hateandwar
Yours is what Laurie has called the V3. With the 4558 and 14558's
I compared identical settings on yours & mine. At small venue-cafe volumes, I couldn't hear any appreciable difference, using nothing but two 10 foot leads, my Blackie Strat and my Roland Spirit 40W Solid State amp, & a Dr. Bob regulated power supply.
I couldn't test it with the fender Tube amp, because the family were all home.
I hate to speculate, but the commonality between the two is that IC3 is a SIP NJM4558. I have access to a friends MT-2 & hopefully it's a V1 with all M5218's If I can get him to bring it over in the next week or so, I'll do another A/B test.
He has to pop over & drop off, his Dean Markley acoustic amp. He told me he thinks it just caught a dose of the swine flu. And is onding very sick when it warms up
I found a setting that I fell in love with on these MT-2's. I PM-ed Laurie telling him that I have a new found appreciation of the MT-2, well at least when IC3 is an 4558 opamp.
Hey hateandwar, it was while I was repairing your MT-2, & chatting with Laurie, that spearheaded the findings with the 3 variations of the MT-2.
Regards Dr. Bob

Hi Guys As I promised, here are a couple of (overcast) daylight pics of the the two MT-2 that I have here at the moment.
The one that has the Redder text belongs to Hateandwar (Jake). The orange text one is my personal non-modded pedal.
Regards Dr. Bob

Very interesting. I thought the MT-2 was one of the pedals that hadn't changed. Shows what I know.
Mine (YQ75379 Feb-03) is a type2. |

I just got my MT2 back today and i seriously could not do with out it, it gives me the deep hard edged metal sound i love using.
I can get my metal sound like some of my favorite bands (Whitechapel, At the Throne of Judgment, The Black Dahlia Murder, The Red Shore)
I always use it with very low tuning also, it doesn't get muddy or anything.
Theres no way i can get the same sound out of my other pedals including the HM2 and HM3. Ill stop rambling now! That's my 5 cents! Cheers, Jake. |

| Well at least now I know I wasn't imagining things when I thought my old early 90's MT-2 sounded different from my new post-2006 one! |
