Hi Bossarea & Guys I was wondering if anyone has used the: Cranetortoise GC-1 Great Compressor Any opinions & comments would be welcome. I believe it's an Optical Compressor, they also make a GC-2 stripped down version, in which they state that the GC-2 uses optical compression.
There is a Poor video demo at the top of the page.
Regards Dr. Bob
SORRY GUYS, but you will have to Select the entire link text & paste it into the URL area in your browser. It's because of the double Http that the google translator inserts, it then works ok.
Here is a link to the translated info page: http://translate.google.com/translate?hl=en&sl=ja&u=http://www.river.sannet.ne.jp/albit/GC-1.html&sa=X&oi=translate&resnum=1&ct=result&prev=/search%3Fq%3DGC-1%2BGREAT%2BCOMPRESSOR%26hl%3Den%26client%3Dfirefox-a%26channel%3Ds%26rls%3Dorg.mozilla:en-US:official%26hs%3D8Tk%26sa%3DG
And here is the Translated HomePage:

Hi Dr.Bob
Well, That cranetortoise GC-1 really deserves the MEGA RARE title. It seems that nobody knows nothing about it. Good luck.

Hi Ptero Thanks for ther only reply. I thinks DiscoFX has a couple of pics & a link, on his site, but not much else from memory.
I managed to find the fault, a couple of 2200uf 25V caps had gone high ESR & gassed out (very pregnant). It seems that there is a basic design fault with this unit.
It has a 9VAC input, that is multiplied to about 28VDC on each cap, hence 2 of the multiplier caps being 25V gassing out.
This is then feds +/-28VDC into a pair of 7815 & 7915 +/- 15 volt regulators for the front end pre-amps which is a either a TL072 or a JRC4558. I haven't traced out the circuit that far yet. the preamp has +/- 15VDC regulated for HEAPS of Headroom.
The compression is done optically by a PAIR of HPK P873-25 Opto-couplers, I think these are a LDR-LED type Opto, but I don't have the data-sheets for these yet. Maybe you have seen some info on these Opto's?
I had an Asian friend try to translated the single sheet of instructions, but he said his Japanese was "Not so good". It does seem that this unit, is studio quality.
I have tried it out, but remember that it's totally disassembled at the moment, but on first impressions, it sound very nice with guitar, it is supposed to be good for vocals as well. I will keep you informed.
Ptero, I took about 10 hi-res pics of the unit, while it's disassembled, let me know if you are interested, I'll PM them to you. I think Stratman wanted to see them as well.
It's hard to get any info on this unit, but I did see an ad for one, it was listed at $350US.
