My friend has a marshall pedal, The Jackhammer JH 1 he wants to get rid of, I can't try it out because he doesent have an amp, he said he would sell it to me for $100 AUS, is this a good price and are these good pedals?
I'm not sure how old it is but its got an od/dist, gain, volume, treb, bass, freq and contour knobs if that helps. Cheers everyone |

Have you tried a forum search? I think there was some recent discussion about these pedals here, though I may be getting mixed up |

Hi hateandwar
They are pretty good pedals, underrated in my opinion.
I normally won't pay more than $70 to $75au for these pedals. most times with box & manual.
I picked up 2 Gov'ners in box & man for that just a few months back. The ones with the gold hardware Knobs & foot switch, I think they are called the Gov'ner II.
These pop up at pawn shops & CacheConv. every so often.
Please let me/us know what you think of the JH-1 after you test it out at home.

Well this pedal has been on my board since sunday and I've decided that I don't really like it. This dist mode for me was wayy too muddy, and the overdrive was pretty good, buuuut for me it sounded too thin. Even though this thing weighs a ton and is build like a tank, I think I will look elsewere for an overdrive. I'm yet to try out a boss one so maybe that's what I should do. What do you think Dr. Bob ? Cheers, Jake. |

I have the ibanez ts9dx turbo (got it for $30 US...which is a steal) and I like it. It has 4 modes of distortion (only 1 is useable to me, but I like the one mode so it was worth it). Also, as far as boss goes, I have the SD-1 and I like it. I liked it when I first got it, then I decided I liked the Ibanez better, and now I'm actually back to the SD-1. It's a touch harsh to my ears, but I upgraded my pickups on my les paul copy and picked up an EQ pedal and that helped (fyi, I play out of an AC15CC1). I actually run my Ibanez OD intro my SD-1 so I have 3 different levels of OD (ibanez is low gain and SD-1 is mid gain so I have 3 combos: only ibanez, only sd-1, or both...then they run into a proco rat distortion pedal for leads...but I'll stop there :). I've heard good things about running a boss OD-3 into a SD-1 and vice versa etc. etc. if you like that kind of thing...
Hope that helps on your OD search! Let us know what you end up with!

Hi hateandwar/Jake
Tone is such a subjective thing, difficult to quantify, harder to explain.
I'm not sure what type of "dirt" tone pedal you are searching for? I don't think you actually mentioned that point.
With dirt pedals, I call it the 101 syndrome. That is if you already have 100 distortion-overdrive pedals, & you spot another one, then it's most likely that you will go & buy that one as well.
Many of us here have multiple dirt pedals, & still we keep searching for that "ONE TONE" that we will probably never find. It's one of the best kept marketing secrets...
Also be very aware, that how you perceive the tone, is very much subjective, & relative to what kind of a mood you are in, & especially how fatigued you & your hearing are.
We have discussed this topic a few times here on the forum.
Franzoni, being the latest victim, of auditory & perceptual fatigue.
I have a bunch of pedals that only sound good on some days, & especially if you have been at it in the studio for hour after hour. What you think is sounds great now, might end up sounding like a pile of dog carp, in the morning.
Important Rule #1 - Learn to give your ears a rest, & protect your hearing.
Don't play too loud, set up your rig & pedals at gigging volumes, & listen to the difference between that setting, & bedroom rock god setting.
Try to test your pedal in a live band situation, & you might get a big shock, realizing that the tone you're searching for, actually has a lot more mids in it; Especially if your a 6 stringed guitarist.
For another life changing lesson. Get out where the audience hears your playing.
Good luck with your search. Let us know what you find.

Heh heh... Dr Bob hit the nail on the head....tone especially when it involves overdrive/distortion/fuzz has to be one of the most contentious issues for discussion.... what floats one persons boat will do nothing for someone else, there are so many factors to weight up...amp,type of guitar and pickup, pedal, type of tone desired...i'm playing a lot more acoustic these days(still using my boss pedals... ) and have to say i'm enjoying it a lot..part of the problem for me with electric guitar i think is the venues....i starting to believe a lot of what satch and joe bonamassa have to say about tone loss especially the bass end through the floor..or the opposite effect if your on a hollow stage you get a muddy sound....although amplifing the acoustic guitar brings about it's own unique problems....... which no doubt i will be posting in the future....... ........ |

Hi hateandwar
I think your best bet, would be to try out as many pedals as you can. Ask friends & other muso mates, most are very obliging. But write down their settings before you, change them.
At some point you will find something that you like, or at least that you can live with.
Aldi are having another pedal sale, starting next Thursday. I am still waiting to see their catalog, & which ones are on sale. Last time they had a mixture of the E10 plastic cased ones and the E20 metal cased ones.
These pedals sell under many different names on evilbay. Freedom at Aldi Daphon on evilbay and one other name I can't recall.
I heard around $30au - not bad value for what's inside. I posted a thread here way way back on the Aldi freedom pedals, when I was still Copper or Bronze.......
