I'm with PaulH - I always thought that the seagulls sounds was from fuzz, delay, vol pedal/knob and either whammy bar or slide....maybe some wha too.
Interesting if that is not the case.
DeFrag - you are a gentleman and a scholar to post that mod/schematic (proof that there are some big brains on this board) but I almost did a spit take with my morning cup of joe on the which track on Echoes comment. No idea why I found that funny, but I did.

I'm pretty certain Gilmour was using a reverse connected wah.
It's just I've never owned a wah pedal so many years ago I had to work out some other way of doing it... delay & volume gets you pretty close.
I still don't own a wah pedal so still have no idea what the effect of reversing the connection does. |

Another Floyd note, on Animals - Dogs, I've sworn for 30+ years that the dogs barking right before the solo kicks in, is nothing more than Gilmour using a slide in short strokes. When I try to discern anything more than my brain hears, the barking morphs into an electronic sample or such, then back into a guitar slide I swear I can see him doing it on the guitar.
Of course in The Wall's - Comfortably Numb guitar solo, I clearly hear the word "gank" as David makes his guitar speak to me. Yes, I still get shivers down my spine when I hear those nuances & say: "How the hell did he do that!?" Its all in the fingers...
Its weird when your mind plays trick on you. To this day, there are still embellishments that are new every time I listen to them. Which is why I suppose is one of the reasons why Pink Floyd is still my favorite band of all time.
& thanks Zesty, I suppose all of their offerings is really just one long song after all. |

Interestingly, part of the "wind noise" in the background of the seagull noises on middle part of Echoes is done by Roger Waters on the bass. Basically, use a slide and just rest it on the strings around the 12th fret, and then make circular patterns with it, add some delay and there you have it.
Both are easy effects to reproduce with good use of just delay & volume... they're just a bugger to get exacly right.
If you have the album Meddle. The Seagull effect comes in after about 12 minutes up to about 14 minutes. The bass wind-noise comes in a bit before.
If you have the album Echoes The Best Of Pink Floyd. The track Echoes has been edited down (particularly the Seagull bit) Anyway... the Seagull effect comes in after about 9 1/2 minutes up to about 10 1/2 minutes. Again, the bass wind-noise comes in a bit before.
I have always used the stick you hit a triangle with (the musical instrument), it works just like a bow for violin and are better suited than an slide. I got the idea from Fred Frith, seeing him doing a solo concert in the 70s.
If you do this all alone and listen carefully there are a lot of tones in there, they shift slighly over time, really psychedelic
Its also very nice to use a phaser. |

I found this site a few years ago,it has a wealth of info on Gilmour and his gear during the different stages of the floyd and his solo stuff..... www.gilmourish.com not to be rude but i think gilmour has stated that the 'seagulls' was a wah plugged in the wrong way around... |

| ^That's an amazing site, great for info on his gear and has some cool reviews too. I'm pretty sure I read somewhere that Gilmour said that he reverse plugged his wah accidentally, then used the sound he got on "echoes." |

Geez FRANZONI you are sooooo rude.
So are there any potential issues that would kill your gear (amps, pedals before or after it) that I should know before I try this and make my neighbors think I have a bird sanctuary in my basement?
Totally learn something new every day here. If someone has a link of DG yacking about this I'd love to read it.

No problemo bro'.... ...to be honest i can't see this doing any damage except Mrs Z giving you a crack of a frying pan with all the strange high pitched noise coming out of your amp.... especially with an echo on it.... ..... |
