I am shocked and surprised, because unless I missed the thread, I am shocked and surprised that no one here mentioned Happy Birthday to David Gilmour, who's birthday was March 6th...

Here are some Gilmour pics with a Tele!

Well bugger me... Happy birthday to Dave!

Lauries2's favorite lead break of all time - outro to Comfortably Numb, DSoT version.

I bought the "Live at Pompeii" DVD recently after having visited there. Superb!

At the risk of being flamed... I think Pink Floyd improved musically when Guy Pratt took over bass. Note that I am not talking about the loss of Roger Waters' creativity.

Yeah, I got that DVD, and I may get for this, but I liked that DVD much better than The Wall DVD, I mean yes, they are 2 different types of movie, but the Pompeii stuff is just amazing to see...

Yeah, The Wall movie was a bit luke warm I thought. Great and serious concepts, but Waters was trying too hard to get some personal demons out (which I think he managed to do on "Amused to Death", but I digress). The Wall songs done live on Delicate Sound of Thunder on the other hand... Man I wish they would remaster that and bring it out on DVD

Agree!
Gilmour is one of the best guitarists in my opinion, not the fastest (guitar playing is not an Olympic game), but his tone and timing/phrasing is high class.
Have you ever thought of the fact that guitarist with great tone seldom are fast players, and the reverse?

Happy birthday dave..... defo one of the most creative guitar players around..i too like a lot of the early stuff but i have to say i liked some of the later post waters stuff,as i liked some of waters post floyd stuff..personally i thought that the wall is a bit heavy but with some great songs...lauries 2 said that he thought waters got rid of some of his demons with 'amused to death' and i would agree but i have a soft spot for that album...'it's a miracle' and 'what god wants' are lyrically excellent, very sharp observations on life....'the final cut' is a floyd album is one that gets very little mention anymore as dave, richard and nick had very little if nothing to do about it and have gone on the record as saying that the it was made up of stuff that was rejected for the 'wall' project...but this doesn't mean that the songs are bad, quite the contary..a lot of this stuff stems from the fact the roger waters father died in WW 2 and his mothers over protection of him afterwards, scarred him emotionally for a long time....maybe it was something the others counldn't relate to musically..the opening and closing parts of 'amused to death' are heartbreaking when you hear the old soldier talking about having to leave one of his comrades behind in no mans land..... he really is having a go at the people who so easily send people to their deaths and are found out to be liars with personal gain or re-election prospects involved in their decisions and the whole futility of war....i know all this stuff can be a bit heavyweight to listen to,but some of it is excellent all the same......

I bought the "Amused to Death" CD out of a bargain bin. While I can't listen to it very often (too damn heavy duty), I think it's one of the most cohesive and creative CDs I own.

Anyway, this thread was about Gilmour! I also believe he is one of the best guitarists... ever. My inability to play the outro on Comfortably Numb is one of the things that keeps me going practising - one day it will fall into place...

im sure there's many guitar players that use this technique, but i learned the double bend, the two steps one i mean, from listeneing to floyd, a hard little thing to master i think especially when you frst start. love the gilmour, nearly met him once when at uni, housemates worked freelance for a small company and were set to interview him and i was going along as a photographer to get a few shots. in the end my HOUSEMATES cancelled! imagine that, fools. ah well... maybe ot was better that way.
