Does anyone know what resitor controls the LED brightness ?
when i use a battery its reasonably bright , but when you use
a wal wart / adapter is gets crazy bright ....

The wall wart being used on it shows specs. 9v dc 200mA ( no name )
think it maybe a power supply problem , i had changed the LED to a
3 mm super bright blue .

any help would be great ...thanks

According to the schematic there's a Zenerdiode and a 3k3 resistor in series with the on/off LED, you should track that and replace it with a higher value, something between 4 and 5 kOhms to start with should do the trick.
The schematic doesn't say which part number it is, but the other side of the resistor is connected to Q3.

Those bright blue LED's can be darned bright, that's probably it.
