Guys, sorry for the 'new guy' question, but how can I tell a MIT from a MIJ? And what's the difference? Are the pedals sold in US stores Taiwanese or Japanese?

there are a few different ways that you can tell whether a pedal is made in Japan or Taiwan. the most obvious way is looking on the back panel. it usually says either Made In Japan or Made In Taiwan. sometimes it says in the battery compartment (by opening the thumbscrew). these are 2 good ways to tell.

Japanese made Boss pedals stopped being sold in stores in the late 80s/early 90s i think. the new pedals in stores now are Made in Taiwan.

Is there a way to tell by serial no? Is Japanese generally considered to be of better quality between the two?

Hey warlokk, I think with some pedals there may be a difference but others there is very little if any difference. Just depends on which pedals you look at.

Many people consider the DS-1 MIJ better than the MIT version but others think that a SD-1 sounds the same whether its MIT or MIJ.

there is a very small difference, but a lot of people wont hear it.

MIT works just as good as MIJ (unless you want a specific chip), but because MIJ are older, and not made anymore theyve become more "collectable" which ebay made into BUY HERE MIJ and charge a lot more.

if you want to collect, then sure MIJ is good since they are OOP, but if you want to use them, it makes very little difference

PS: Im not saying theyre exactly the same, but its ebay that made it into some huge thing

Well, I never tried a Mij DS-1 and I have the Mit version but it sounds great. People say that some Mij pedals sound different than Mit pedals. I tested a SD-1 Mij and a Mit pedal at the same time, and yes the Mij sounded better.

But a friend of mine (and heīs a famous musician here) met Mike Stern in NY and asked him about the SD-1 and he said that he didnīt see any difference.

In my opinion, u should read all the posts about circuits and versions of the pedals you want and of course try them before buying.
